“Pete Laker isn’t merely keeping track of the Andersons. He’s been warning me about them.”

“I was honest with Pete about everything that happened.” Holly gave Clary a small smile. “I’m not sure what Seth has or hasn’t told you.”

Clary remained quiet. She’d encountered enough people like Holly and Ressler, and she’d been in court enough times, to know when to keep her mouth shut.

“Has Seth told you anything about me? He must have, or he’d be here instead of you.”

Clary merely returned Holly’s smile.

The soft gaze Holly had been giving her sharpened, for a mere moment.

If Clary hadn’t been watching her carefully, she would have missed it.

“The boys claimed I was the monster, when in fact, I’m the victim.”

“Is that what you want me to know? Is that why you got Pete to hound me?”

“I never told Pete to do anything.”

“Like you never told Remo to do anything.”

Holly adjusted her scarf.

“You’re not supposed to have Internet access.”

Holly looked away. For the first time since they met, she appeared annoyed. “If you just give me a chance,” she resumed the role of a sweet, innocent woman, “you’ll see why Pete and Remo were so eager to protect me. They are good people. Pete is trying so hard to protect you too, right?”

“What’s the point of all this, Holly?”

Holly’s gaze roamed across her face. “I want to speak with my boys. I want to see them. I miss them.”

“They don’t want to speak with you. They don’t want to see you. They don’t miss you—at all.”

Holly stared back at her.

The sweet, small smile morphed into tensed, pursed lips. The soft gaze and wide eyes faded, replaced by a sharpness and brewing anger in her forest-green eyes.

It didn’t scare Clary, though. Instead, it angered her.

Especially as she stared into those eyes and thought about all the different-colored lenses Aldric used to conceal his original eye color. Then there was Oliver’s fear of eating food from people he didn’t know, and Elton’s and Zane’s suspicions of people.

And Seth—the way he couldn’t stand being around people, the way he tensed at physical touches.

“He’ll discard you the way they discarded me.”

Clary barely heard what Holly had said. All she could think about was everything Seth had told her about Holly—the cruel games, the punishment she meted out to them … “I’ll let Mr. E know about your Internet access. I’ll let him know what you’ve done.”

Clary wanted to get back at Holly for all she’d done to Seth and his brothers. She wanted her to suffer the way the Andersons did.

Not a Christian thing to think, but she didn’t care about that right now.

Peering over Holly’s shoulder, Clary studied the room.

In the middle of the room was a large king-sized bed. Further into the room with white walls and sky-blue ceiling was an easel with an empty canvas.

“I hope the next place he puts you in is a place where you won’t even have access to makeup,” Clary said.

Holly scowled. “If you dare to do that, I’ll destroy the boys.”
