Back at Safe Homes, Clary’s approach was simple: Smile. Be sweet and unthreatening. Most of the time, she could pull out way more information than people meant to give her.

This time, though, she couldn’t do that.

Though she would only be pretending, it felt like a betrayal of the Andersons.

“Who told you this?” Andrea asked.

That was when Clary realized this was the first time Andrea would have heard about the disappearance. Yet her assistant’s expression was nothing but calm.

Pete opened his mouth, then shut it as he leaned back in his chair. “You don’t have to worry about that.”

Clary shook her head. “Why should we trust what you’re saying?”

“My client knows the Andersons were involved.”

Only so many people knew about the girl who disappeared—Winnie. And only one person accused the brothers of being involved—Jimmy, the last remaining child Holly had adopted.

So was Jimmy behind all this? Was he still searching for Winnie after all these years? Did he still believe that Seth and his brothers were the ones who hurt his half-sister?

“I’d like to see the evidence, then,” Clary said.

Pete leaned forward. “I have spoken to a firsthand witness, someone who was there that night.”

That narrowed it down to the staff, the Andersons, Holly, and Jimmy.

It couldn’t be Seth or his brothers. Holly had been committed to a wellness center—a high-end mental hospital—since then, so it couldn’t be her either.

Again, that left Jimmy.

Andrea peered over at Clary. “Let us talk to your witness.”

“I can’t.”

Clary shrugged. “Then you could just be making this up.” She drummed her fingers on the mug. “You sent me links to conspiracy theories and—”

“I was trying to get your attention.”

“So do you believe that Movement is building cell towers and spreading illness?”

“No.”

“So you have nothing to do with the people picketing outside Movement?”

“No.”

Clary drummed her fingers on the mug again. With the number of texts Pete had sent and the content of the messages, she had guessed one of the picketers outside Seth’s office had hired him.

So she was left with one suspect.

“What about the attempt to hack into Movement?” Andrea pushed her mug aside and rested her forearm on the table. “Were you behind that?”

Pete folded his arms over his chest. “No comment.”

Clary dropped her gaze to the Android phone on the table. The phone was relatively small. The black plastic cover was all scratched up, revealing a gray layer under the black.

She wasn’t sure what model it was, but it looked old.

Tech-savvy people usually kept up with the latest devices, so Pete had probably hired someone else to do the hacking.
