Clary nodded slowly.

“I don’t mind taking photos with you, but it still feels uncomfortable to see anyone taking photos of me.”

“I won’t take the video, then. I’ll just keep this in my memory.”

“If you want, we can come out here every Christmas.”

Clary smiled. Back in New York, she’d never made plans too far in the future because her job at Safe Homes didn’t allow it. A new case could come up any time, and she was so committed to her job everything else in her life revolved around it.

So she’d meant it when she said she hadn’t thought about marrying Seth.

She just never gave much thought about her future.

But hearing Seth’s plans was tempting her to do just so, and she could. She was the CEO of EB Co. now. She could make personal plans and keep them.

Another buzz from Seth’s pocket told her otherwise.

“You should really check your phone,” she said.

Seth shook his head. “I’m out on a date with you.”

“Seth, I really don’t mind. I feel kind of uneasy that you’re ignoring whatever seems so urgent on your phone.”

“What makes you think it’s urgent?”

“I can hear it buzzing. I seriously doubt you’re the type to condone your assistant bombarding your phone.” She grabbed the railing to stop Seth from pulling her along. “And it’s Christmas. You should help solve whatever the problem is so everyone can go home to their families instead of waiting for your decision at work.”

Seth sighed heavily and took the phone out of his pocket. “There’s been an attempted hack into Movement’s system.”

“That’s serious, right? Considering all the top-secret projects you’re working on.”

“The most top-secret projects are on local network. I don’t allow them to be connected to the Internet, so even if the hacker succeeds, it won’t do too much damage.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. Can you imagine the PR fallout?” She dragged herself along the edge, moving toward the exit. “We’re leaving—now.”

“Clary.” He gently took her elbow, then sucked in a breath as he hesitated.

“I’m not upset, Seth. I promise.”

He blew out a breath. “I’m still sorry.”

“It’s okay. I had fun.” She leaned forward and gave him a peck on the cheek.

“I’ll make it up to you.” He took her hands and led her toward the exit.

“There’s nothing to make up. I can head back on my own.”

He stepped out of the ring first, then helped her out with a firm grip. They took a few steps toward the bench, and he kneeled down and helped untie the laces he’d tied for her.

“I can do it myself.”

Seth ignored her. “Do you want to come with me?” He jerked his chin up and shook his head. “I should take you home. You’ll be bored if—”

“I don’t mind going with you. I can wish the picketers a blessed Christmas.”

“You’re going home.”

She pouted, but she couldn’t keep being disgruntled when Seth slipped her sneakers onto her feet for her. “Seth, you really don’t have to do this for me.” It was sweet, but …
