“Because if we took a wrong step and ruined her mood …”

Clary stepped on his foot just then. “I’m sorry,” she said with wide eyes. “I swear it wasn’t on purpose.”

He gave her a peck on the forehead. “I hope you like this.”

“I do. It’s really romantic.” She rested her face against his shoulder. “Though we’re probably messing up the temperature control for the wine.”

Seth hadn’t thought she would mind. Then again, she could hold her liquor.

She jerked her head back to look at him. “I don’t mind.”

“Are you sure? We can—”

“I really don’t care. I’m not a wine snob.”

“I think people call them wine connoisseurs.”

“I think it’s pretentious.”

He laughed and gently tucked her head back in place against him. How in the world did he ever associate Clary with the Eolenfelds? “I’m sorry it took me so long to take you out on an actual date.”

“We’re not actually out on a date yet.”

He hooked his lips back.

“It feels like a Benjamin Button scenario,” she continued. “We’ve done everything backwards. You bought me a ring, then you told me you love me, and now we’re going out on a date.” She laughed softly. “It started out all wrong, didn’t it?”

Seth winced. “I’m sorry.”

“Seth.” She lifted her head and gave him a stern glare. “You need to figure out when I’m joking.”

“I know you’re joking, but you’re still right.”

“It doesn’t matter to me. How could it?”

Seth arched a brow, and Clary’s tongue darted across her lips.

“We haven’t talked about this.”

“That doesn’t sound good.”

She stopped moving and took a small step back. “You could’ve died.”

Seth hadn’t allowed himself to think about what had happened. So much had happened over the last two weeks, and everything felt surreal.

He could have lost Clary twice.

Being here, with her in his arms, was a miracle. “We already talked about it. You thanked me. I said you should marry me.” And unless she suddenly decided that she wanted more discussion on that last topic, he wasn’t interested in talking about the bomb anymore.

She laughed once. “I’m serious. I feel like there’s so much more to say. You could’ve died. I would’ve died …” She shook her head. “I would’ve been blown up.” Her eyes widened as she said that, as if she was only just realizing it now.

Seth pulled her back against his shoulder. “Let’s just never talk about that again.”

She pushed against his chest and took a step back.

He waited while she opened her mouth, then shut it again.

“I don’t know what to say.” She sighed.
