“It’s okay. I’ve been to strip clubs too.”

“Clubs?” he said, emphasizing the ‘s.’

“I was looking for a child’s aunt to see if she wanted to take in her niece instead of letting her enter the foster system. I had to pay for a private lap dance to speak with her.” Clary laughed as she thought about what happened. “I didn’t quite dare to sit down or touch anything in the room she brought me to.” She curtailed the laugh as she glanced over at Aldric. “And he mops the floor of places like that, doesn’t he?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

Seth shrugged.

“Is he working? He can’t just show up to work drunk, right? I can’t imagine he could get up in time.”

“He’s a game designer.”

She arched a brow. “I’ve heard the working hours for gaming companies are crazy.”

“He doesn’t do the coding. He comes up with the concept and does a lot of consultation for escape rooms, amusement parks, and so forth. It’s project-based.”

“So when he’s not working, he’s partying.”

“Yeah. He’s rarely ever home. I think we bore him.” Seth turned to face her. “Do I bore you?”

“I don’t think living a simple life is boring. I think it’s completely underrated.” She looked around the living room. “I don’t mind going crazy once in a while, but I don’t have the energy or desire to do this every other day, or even once a week, or month.” She smiled at Seth and fluttered her eyelids. “I find enjoyment in annoying you every day. Have I asked you to receive Jesus into your heart today?”

She’d expected Seth to roll his eyes, but he just stared at her.

The streaks of brown in his pine-green eyes appeared to move as his watchful gaze roamed across her face again. “I’d like to be where you’d be—wherever that is.”

“I wish that was enough.” She rested her head against his shoulder. “But it isn’t faith in me that will give you eternal life.”

“Why are you so sure that Jesus hears you? That it isn’t just you imagining a friend?”

“Because He shows me His power.” She sat up straight and held her hand up. “The numbness is completely gone, as I told you it would be.”

Seth’s eyes slitted again.

“And I asked for a Christmas miracle: to be able to refund the fees before Christmas.”

“I’d think I’m part of the reason you could do that.”

She nodded. “Jesus sent you to me.”

“He did not.”

“Come on, Seth. Think about it. Of all the times the board could decide to sell Movement’s robotic arm, they did so when I’d just taken over EB Co. Then, at the same time, Mr. E decided to hide from his money-grubbing family. So many things had to come into play for our paths to cross. Were they all coincidences?”

He hooked his hand on her hip, but didn’t say a word.

“And could you even imagine, just over two weeks ago, that you’d have someone associated with the Eolenfelds sitting on your lap? That you and your brothers would be staying in an Eolenfeld mansion.” She rested her head on his shoulder again. “You’re pretty good at math. What are the chances of all that happening?” She closed her eyes. “Who else could it be but God?”

Seth brushed his fingers through her hair, but otherwise said nothing.

“I’ll sleep on the couch tonight,” Clary continued. “You should get a turn to relax too.”

“You went to bed late after wrapping the presents, then woke up early to prepare the food.”

“I love the dishwasher.”
