“I don’t want to talk about him today, so get out of here before I make you peel potatoes or something.”

But even as Elton went scurrying out, Clary’s phone buzzed with a text message.

And who else could it be but her—possibly—recently acquired stalker and claimed protector.

Clary put her phone, screen down, on the countertop and headed out.

CHAPTER 6

Clary had come to realize that with Aldric around, everything was fun. Loud and fun.

Fun, because Aldric could make a game of anything. Loud, because liquor was always involved.

If she hadn’t lied that she did not know where the key to the underground wine cellar was, Aldric would have raided it and they might all die from alcohol poisoning.

Clary brought a glass of wine over to Seth, who was sitting on the corner of the couch since a sleeping Oliver took up the rest of the space. “Here.”

Seth shook his head.

“I’m not drunk.”

Seth gave her a head-to-toe scan.

“Do you need me to walk in a straight line to prove I’m not drunk?” she asked.

“I still can’t get over how much you can drink.”

“I didn’t drink that much.”

His eyes slitted.

“Again, it’s Grandma Moretti’s and Mr. E’s fault.” The two of them had allowed her to drink from quite a young age. Probably not a good thing to let the Andersons know.

Grandma Moretti and Mr. E both thought it was better that she learn how to drink at home instead of getting drunk elsewhere. She supposed that was wise, but unnecessary.

Because she never drank much when she was out.

She held the glass out to Seth. “You only took one glass the whole night.” And he hadn’t even finished it.

Seth took the glass from her and set it down on the coffee table. Then he scanned the roomful of drunken people before grabbing her wrist and giving it a tug.

Clary squealed as she fell into his lap.

Andrea’s and Zane’s heads shot up, then dropped back to the floor as they concluded there was no danger.

“You might not think you’re drunk,” Seth said, “but your cognitive abilities are affected when you drink.”

She laughed softly. “I don’t drive anyway.” She tipped her head to the side so she could look him right in the eyes. “I have someone to drive me around.”

The corners of his lips hooked back.

She ran her fingers through his soft, light brown hair. “I promise I don’t drink much when I’m away from home, because I prefer to keep my wits about me when I’m making my way home.”

Ever since her parents’ and Grandpa Moretti’s murders in Mexico, she and Grandma Moretti had been a lot more cautious. Clary was always very aware of the dangers out there in the world, which was why she didn’t mind the tracking device on her necklace or sharing her location on the phone.

Even when she wasn’t living with Grandma Moretti anymore, even when she was overseas, she always updated her on where she went.

Clary drew a deep breath and hooked an arm around Seth’s neck. “And I make it a point never to drink at work functions.”
