Why did you leave me, Aiden?

There’s a knock on the door, breaking into the moment, and I’m thankful for that. He sees too much, and it’s getting dangerous. It’s been dangerous.

Thankful for the interruption, I swing the door open without checking who it is.

When I do, I see Billy Lewis standing there.

He looks me up and down, his lips twisting up into a smirk. “Nice outfit.” I look down, and that’s when I notice through all the commotion, my shirt has risen up and is high enough that you can see my ribs. I must look like a mess. “Did I interrupt your pre-game fuck?” he asks like the asshole he is. “Does that come with a blow job, Charity?”

“Cassidy,” I seethe, seeing red. What a dick.

This guy has some nerve, considering Aiden almost killed him the last time they were in tight quarters together.

“Billy…” Aiden says his name like a warning. “What do you want?”

“I just came up to see how you’re doing and apologize about the other night. I had way too much to drink and was out of line.”

Aiden cracks his neck but doesn’t say a word.

“Anyway, sorry.” Billy goes to shut the door but then stops. “I heard some douchebag reporter tried to get up here. I told him he wasn’t allowed. He didn’t listen.”

He’s such a freaking liar. I can tell by his smarmy expression. He knew damn well what he was doing, and he for sure told him to come up here. I don’t know what this guy’s angle is, but he’s up to no good, and I’m gonna get to the bottom of it.

“What’s wrong with you, Cinderella?” Billy coos.

My hands ball into fists, and I take a threatening step around Aiden toward Billy. I’m not sure what my plan is, but I want to inflict harm. That’s for sure.

Aiden grabs me around the waist and pulls me back into his chest, whispering into my ear. “He’s trying to goad you, Cass. Just fucking ignore him.” He tilts his head up but doesn’t remove his hands from my waist. “Do you need anything else?”

“Nah. Just came to ensure the dick wasn’t still up here snooping around.”

“I thought you came to apologize,” I grit through my teeth.

He grins down at me, but despite the smile, nothing about the way he looks at me is warm or friendly.

“He’s gone, and now you need to get the fuck out of here too.” Aiden’s voice is low and menacing, but the asshole chuckles.

“See you later on the ice.”

“No, you won’t because you don’t even play,” I snap, but the door is already closed.

He didn’t hear me.

Aiden chuckles, finally dropping his hands. “Don’t let him get to you. He’s just trying to get a rise out of you. He’s notorious for it.”

“He’s an asshole.”

“That he is, but he’s smart and has Coach fooled.”

“He’s not,” I say, shaking my head. “One day, he’s going to slip up, and I’m going to be there to see him fall.”

Aiden pulls his lips into his mouth, trying not to laugh.

“What? He’s awful, Aiden. He’s exactly the kind of guy who takes advantage of women and probably kicks puppies. I can’t stand him.”

Aiden throws his head back and laughs, which is so unlike him before a game.

I narrow my eyes, and a part of my lips tips up. “Do you find something funny about assaulting women and puppies?” I ask, knowing he’s nothing like that.
