The days of seeking out a woman to tend to my needs in that way are over.

She might’ve willingly come for that purpose, but it just doesn’t sit well with me. It’s so out of character for the Cassidy I’ve come to know, that I have to question why she’d sign up for that to begin with.

There are a lot of women who would, and I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that. Men love sex, so why can’t a woman?

It’s just not Cassidy.

“You okay?” she asks, bending down to my ear.

A shiver races over me at the feel of her breath on my neck.

“I’m good.”

“You know,” she says, moving away from my neck. “I could cut your tension with a chainsaw.”

My back stiffens at the phrase. I’ve heard that before, but where?

“You okay?” she says, voice taut.

“Yeah…it’s just…” My words trail off because it’s just a phrase.

“Time to go,” she says, patting my shoulders.

I look up at the wall clock to see she’s right. I need to get dressed and head to the arena.

“I’ll see you after the game,” she says, smiling and making her way out of the room.

I watch her go, unable to shake the feeling that I’m missing something.

But what?

It’s time.

I step out of the locker, the last one on my team, as always, and then start to head toward the rink.

The sounds of my skates on the rubber echo in my ear.

It’s been a rough few days, but I’m ready to get back out there.

The feeling I get when I glide across the ice, is what I need right now.

My anticipation builds the closer I get, and when I’m finally at the entrance, I glide onto the ice, the cold air and familiar smells hitting my face.

I skate across the smooth surface, meeting my team where they’re already skating because I’m always the last of us out here.

When I come to a stop, I hear the roar of the crowd.

Cheering.

“Slate!”

“We love you, Slate.”

I glance around to see why the chanting is growing louder.

When I do, the arena erupts in cheers.

A sea of enthusiastic faces, some painted, others holding signs.
