So I set them free in that moment.

Every laugh.

Every tear.

Every fight.

Every make up.

I lifted her into my arms, shut off the shower, and walked us out of the bathroom, still kissing her, still feeling every inch of her body move, every inhale as she tilted her head at a different angle, every sloppy sound of water, of our mouths colliding like they couldn’t believe it had been so long.

I grabbed a towel and broke away from her just long enough to dry her off, and quickly dry myself off before I picked her up and threw her onto the bed.

She looked sated, happy.

Maybe sex was a bad idea.

We had no clue where we were at, I could break at any moment if she left, I would be at square one, back at the starting line when all I ever wanted was to walk across the finish holding her hand.

I was scared.

I hated being scared.

She leaned up on her elbows, eyes sad. “We should probably eat.”

Taken aback, feeling a bit dejected. I nodded. “Yeah, because of the steak and potatoes, right, yeah.” I pulled away.

Bri burst out laughing. “Get back here, Ace, or you really will have more scratches on your back.”

Never has a man moved so fast, trust me, I looked it up in the Guinness Book of World Records. “How fast has the fastest man ran to a woman he still loves before having sex with her? One point one seconds—Ace Harvey.”

I flipped her onto her back so fast my own head spun as I pinned her arms to the mattress and kissed her again.

“I’m on the pill,” she said between kisses.

“Good, because I have no condoms.” I peeled my mouth away. “Though I wouldn’t put it past Max to put them in the nightstand.”

We both stared at each other in curiosity, then scrambled to each of our nightstands.

Sure enough, we both had a fresh box of condoms along with a book about sex written by none other than Max, and a few books called The Consequences Series. Huh? Romance novels?

“It’s like he knows things,” Bri whispered.

“Let’s make a pact never to bring Max into the bedroom.”

Bri looked back at me. “Oh? And there will be more bedroom time?”

“I wouldn’t put it past him to have handcuffs and I’m well within my right to use them.”

“During sex?”

“No, well, I mean sure, but I don’t want to lose my office mate.”

“So you’ll cuff me to the bed?”

“Yup, then to myself, you’ll be like the little kid that they put a leash on so they don’t run off.”

“Maybe rethink that sentence.”
