“And the kids are with some of the grandparents, so it’s game on!” another one added.

Mace clapped me on the shoulder, his laughter contagious. “Let me introduce you to everyone, and then you can struggle to remember everyone’s name,” he teased.

And struggle I did. As the names of fourteen individuals were hurled at me in rapid succession, I felt my head spin. The men’s names seemed to stick a bit better, likely due to the patches adorning their vests.

Barracuda, Playboy, Six-Gun, Monk, Rebel, Jet, and Jinx.

But when it came to the women, I was hopelessly lost. Their names blurred together in a whirlwind of introductions.

As the group made their way into the funeral home, I couldn’t help but marvel at how easily they functioned and existed. Despite the solemn setting, their presence injected a sense of warmth and familiarity into the funeral home.

“I can say I have never hung out in a funeral home when there wasn’t a funeral,” one of the women remarked, her laughter filling the room. If memory served me right, she was close to Monk, so that meant she was Mitzy. Possibly. Jinx and Jet both had women with names that began with J, but I didn’t know which name went with who. Maybe this was Jemma?

Dorothy’s voice brought me back to the present, her concern evident in her whispered question. “Are you okay? You look like you’re trying to do math in your head.”

I chuckled weakly, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the introductions. “It sure feels like that,” I admitted, leaning closer to her. “Do you think maybe they would wear name tags? We’ve got a stack of them in the office.”

“Stick with me, and I’ll remind you who is who,” Dorothy offered, her reassuring smile putting me at ease.

“Was that Mitzy who just talked?” I asked, hoping to cement at least one name in my memory.

Dorothy nodded, her expression amused. “Yeah, she manages the club’s strip club.”

A wistful sigh escaped me as I glanced around at the vibrant personalities filling the room. “You know, being around the MC kind of makes me feel like my life is pretty boring. I’m just the boring funeral director.”

Dorothy’s touch was gentle as she cupped my cheek, her eyes filled with warmth and affection. “I’m pretty sure all of these guys wouldn’t think everything we did the past two weeks was boring. Especially the maple casket,” she teased, her lips meeting mine in a sweet kiss that banished any lingering doubts from my mind.

“You’re probably right,” I murmured.

“And you more than fit in with these guys,” Dorothy added, her voice laced with admiration. “When you were talking to Barracuda the other day, I thought all you needed was a cut like theirs, and you could totally be in the club.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at her words, a sense of pride swelling within me. “That might be a stretch, babe, but I appreciate you trying to puff me up.”

Her playful wink and the gentle bump of her hip against mine filled me with warmth. “You’re welcome,” she replied, her smile lighting up her face.

“That’s enough, you two,” Imogen called. “You guys had two weeks all to yourselves.”

“You work fast, girl,” Mitzy called. “I didn’t even know you had your sights on ol’ boy here.”

Dorothy glanced up at me. “Probably since I didn’t even know him a month ago.”

Mitzy wagged her finger at Dorothy. “That’s that fast I was talking about. But go on, honey. If you know what you want, take it.”

“I mean, is that really any faster than the rest of us fell?”

“Raelynn,” Dorothy whispered.

“If we want to go off of who knew who the longest before they hooked up, then you know that Mitzy is going to win. She’s been around the club longer than any of us by triple.”

“Prudence. She’s with Rebel,” Dorothy muttered.

“You might want to stop talking like I’m some old club dinosaur,” Mitzy warned. “I was too busy keeping the strip club afloat to even look at these guys. Monk made me notice him.”

“Romantic.”

“That’s either Jemma or Maggie. They’re hooked up with Jet and Jinx,” Dorothy explained.

“I thought Jet and Jinx were hooked up with Js?” Was I remembering that wrong?
