A flicker of uncertainty passed over Dorothy’s features, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of anticipation. Something was brewing between us, something I had felt since the day we met, and I didn’t want to dance around it anymore. The worst she could do was tell me to take a hike, and I could handle that. But what if she felt the same way?

She hesitated for a moment before slowly dropping her hand, revealing uncertainty in her eyes. “I don’t know what to say,” she admitted softly, her vulnerability catching me off guard.

“What are you feeling?” I asked softly, stepping closer to her until there was only a foot of space between us.

“I’m thinking this is either going to end amazing or in disaster,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Yeah, those were the two options. “Something you might not know about me, babe, is that I’m always up for a gamble,” I replied with a hint of a smirk, reaching out my hand to her. “Especially when I know what’s up for grabs is well worth the risk.”

Dorothy’s gaze flicked from my chest to my face, her mind undoubtedly racing with a thousand thoughts and possibilities. “I should run,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“Not forcing you to do anything,” I reassured her gently, wanting her to know that the decision was hers to make. I only wanted this if Dorothy did, too.

Her eyes searched mine, silently pleading for reassurance. “And what happens tomorrow?” she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.

A full-on smirk spread across my lips as I stepped toward her, closing the distance between us until there was barely a breath of space separating our bodies. “Well, I can’t tell you exactly how tomorrow will go,” I murmured, my voice low and intimate. “But I can think of a few things we can do to help pass the time.”

“Rocco,” she whispered, her voice barely above a breath.

I reached up, my hand brushing against her cheek, the connection sparked with electricity. “Come here, Dorothy,” I whispered, my heart pounding with anticipation as I leaned in closer, ready to close the distance between us.

Dorothy

I wanted this.

I had wanted it since the day I ran right into Rocco.

Now, he was standing in front of me with no shirt on, asking me straight out if I wanted him, and I was frozen.

This was too good to be true. This happened to women in fairytales, not me, Dorothy, the funeral director who had just discovered she actually liked embalming. Yikes.

“Dorothy,” he called again, his voice pulling me from my thoughts.

“If I kiss you now, I’m going to kiss you again,” I blurted out, my heart racing in my chest.

“I freaking hope so,” he laughed, his eyes dancing with amusement.

“While we’re working,” I clarified, wanting to establish some ground rules amidst the whirlwind of emotions coursing through me. “Like, all the time.”

“I mean, as long as you don’t try to make out with me while we’re talking to a family or while embalming a body, I’m game for whatever you want,” he replied with a grin, his words sending a shiver down my spine. “We’re both adults here, Dorothy, and we know what we want.”

I was an adult, although sometimes I still looked for someone more adult when things were tough, but that was beside the point. This wasn’t a tough choice. I knew I wanted Rocco, no matter the outcome down the road.

“That’s the rules?” I asked, needing the confirmation before taking the leap into the unknown.

Rocco tipped his head, his gaze intense. “Yeah, I think that’s all the rules I have. I’m yours whenever you want me.”

This was it. I hadn’t seen it coming, but when did you ever really see finding someone like Rocco coming? “Kiss me,” I whispered, my voice barely above a breath.

I knew this could end in disaster, with the worst thing being that I would need to find a new job. But I also knew this could be amazing. I could end up like Imogen and Mace. I could finally be happy with someone who was only mine.

Rocco didn’t hesitate. He didn’t second-guess what he wanted. He closed the distance between us and pressed his lips to mine.

The kiss was electric, sending sparks flying through every inch of my body. His bare chest pressed against me, his arms pulling me close as if he never wanted to let me go. My hands found their way to his chest, feeling the warmth of his skin beneath my fingertips.

We kissed like there was no tomorrow, lost in each other and the overwhelming rush of desire that consumed us both. And then, as if by some unspoken agreement, Rocco lifted me into his arms and carried me up the stairs to his room.

He tossed me onto the bed with a playful grin, his eyes burning with passion as he hovered above me. “You sure you want this, babe?” he asked, his voice husky with desire.
