‘Don’t forget us,’ Polly said. ‘We need to apologise too — we helped. She knows we were involved too, right?’

Paige nodded. ‘How did you know?’

‘She won’t reply to my texts either,’ Polly said sadly.

‘Right, so we think ambush with kindness and clarity then yeah? Explain it all as a group?’ Mya said as she came back to the table and lined up the shots.

‘No! We’re not thinking ambush. Bloody hell, Mya,’ Sophie cried.

Polly frowned. ‘We’re trying to be sensible here.’

‘There’s more,’ Paige said, figuring they needed the whole story. ‘I don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I mean, I didn’t give her enough of me. I kept myself at a distance.’

‘You were showing her how you felt with the gestures, Paige.’ Polly put her hand on Paige’s arm.

‘But when I wasn’t doing that I just . . . She hasn’t had a chance to see the best of me yet. The majority of our time together has either been in bed or with me being a grump.’

Polly shrugged. ‘That is you, and we love you. But yeah, it sounds like you need a heart on your sleeve type conversation with her.’

‘I’m telling you now this road leads to ambush.’ Mya took a shot. ‘You’ll see.’

They all shook their heads, took a shot, and slammed their glasses back down on the table.

‘Right, right. So, right, and so you’re going to need to try and spend as much time with her on the art thingy as possible,’ Polly said.

‘Yeah, that’s the one. It’s all about cominica . . . comic . . . communication — it always is.’ Sophie nodded.

Paige’s own eyes were a bit bleary but her heart felt lighter at the possibilities they’d discussed, and Paige had hope. She didn’t know the outcome, her mojo not helping in this, but she was grateful for that. It needed to come from Paige. Just her.

‘So ambush then. Just like I said. I’m a genius,’ Mya said as she dropped her head onto Polly’s shoulder.

‘We need food,’ Polly said as she stroked Mya’s hair.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Melanie

‘Thanks for this,’ Melanie said, pointing to the long-length waterproof coat.

‘You got thermals and the like?’ Emily asked.

‘I’ll be fine. I’m sure it won’t be that bad.’

‘You’re painting a wall outside in Manchester. Let me find you some more bits and pieces.’ Melanie watched as Emily ran around her wardrobes and drawers throwing clothes all over the show.

‘Do you ever think you’ll find a partner?’ Melanie suddenly asked, more surprised than Emily that she’d voiced the question that had been sat right at the back of her brain, but now it was out there, she needed to know.

‘I have to focus on Alfie and on work for the time being. But I am reluctant. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why. We didn’t exactly get raised with a shining example. And I don’t say this often enough but I really am so grateful that you’re raising Alfie with me. He’s not missing for anything.

‘But I would never rule it out. In fact, there’s a consultant. But that would never work. We’d never see each other. Why do you ask?’

Melanie shrugged and looked back down at the raincoat on her lap as she sat on the end of her sister’s bed.

‘Does this have something to do with the hot as hell Paige?’

‘Do you believe in psychics?’ Melanie asked.
