‘That’s true, she could be a right cow. I mean I doubt it but maybe she puts brown sauce on her bacon butty? Maybe she sleeps with socks on? Maybe she hates Doc Marten’s? She hates cats?’

‘She might not be attracted to women,’ Paige said before she could stop herself.

‘Oh, she definitely is. It’s on her Instagram bio,’ Sophie said with a huge grin, before turning her phone towards Paige to show the bio in question. Paige studied it closely.

‘I knew you liked her!’

‘I don’t know her,’ Paige said again, growling as she pushed the phone back at Sophie as she got up and started putting down some food for Mr Higgins.

‘Sure you don’t,’ Sophie said with a little chuckle as the door knocked with a rhythm that could only be one person. ‘Polly’s here, let’s see what she thinks shall we?’

Sophie got up to let Polly in, and before any welcoming pleasantries were passed, Sophie cried, ‘Polly, what do you think Paige’s deal is with Melanie?’

‘Oh, erm.’ Polly looked over at Paige, who was already scowling in response.

‘Come on. Don’t worry she’s not really bitey today, she just hugged me. Go on.’

‘Well, I get the impression Paige would quite like to know Melanie a little better.’

‘That’s subtle,’ Sophie said. ‘But yes, that’s what I think too. But with a tad more banging.’

Chapter Four

Melanie

Despite the Tesco dash yesterday they were still short on prosecco. So Melanie had asked some of her team to go out and find more. She had the supplier on the phone now, an AirPod in one ear, her phone on her shoulder under the bra strap so that she could tend the bar at the same time as doing everything else.

Thankfully, her colleagues appeared with six boxes of prosecco they’d sourced — as long as they got a delivery tomorrow that should get them through.

‘Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. Go put it in the back and then I need you out front as quick as you can. Thanks again.’

As they disappeared, the most unexpected person appeared at the entrance — and was now heading in her direction.

‘You know I’ve never been in here before. It’s very . . . erm . . . shiny. And flowery.’

Melanie mentally rolled her eyes, refusing to give Paige the visual satisfaction. Paige might have dropped the grumpy glare, but Melanie was professional through and through, and needed to be. A lot rested on the success of this venture.

‘What can I get you? Or are you here to admire the aesthetic?’ Shit, she hadn’t actually meant to say that. Why did Paige have this effect on her, and why was her stomach all tingly, and nervous?

‘Ms Curzon, are you still there?’ The voice in her ear disturbed her thoughts.

‘Yes, yes! I’m here. Is it all sorted?’

Melanie saw a look of confusion pass over Paige’s face, so she pointed to her AirPod, and mouthed sorry. Not that Paige deserved it necessarily, but she hated being rude.

‘Can you confirm your order again, please?’

Melanie pressed her lips together and took a breath, preparing to repeat herself for the fourth time. ‘Tomorrow, I need twenty boxes of prosecco, and then my regular twice weekly order that you deliver Tuesday and Friday. Yesterday’s of course never turned up. It’s a standard repeating order so I don’t understand where the issue is?’

‘Yes, it would seem that the standard ordered was cancelled. So, you want that rolling delivery back on, and you want it on Tuesdays and Friday’s, yes?’

‘I don’t understand how it was cancelled, but yes please. The problem I have right now though is that I didn’t get yesterday’s. I need it.’

‘Well we can get ten boxes to you tomorrow and have the standard delivery sorted out, starting from next Tuesday. I’m sorry for the inconvenience but that’s the best I can do.’

‘Fine. Fine. Thank you for sorting it out.’

‘No problem. Thanks for your call.’
