‘If anything, I think I was too subtle. I should have told her you were drooling over her, that you needed her.’

Sophie and Polly shook their heads. ‘No.’

‘I really like it in here, it has a really good vibe,’ Polly said, always the peacekeeper.

‘Yeah, it’s good, isn’t it?’ Mya agreed.

Sophie picked up her phone. ‘Notifications are already crazy. Should I add in a swipe-up link so they can book a table? Can they do that on Lulu’s website? Let me check.’

Sophie had her head down.

‘Right onto the next stage of the plan,’ Polly announced, her eyes wide with mischief.

‘Yeah, well I can’t say the first stage went all that well,’ Paige muttered as Sophie snorted, her eyes still on her phone.

‘Why, what happened? How can you get babysitting wrong?’ Polly asked.

‘We were terrible! Alfie spilt his milk everywhere and Melanie had to come and sort it. Then he managed to get water all over himself. Melanie had to come and sort it . . .’

Polly and Mya were both laughing. ‘Right load of help you two are.’

‘It gets worse,’ Paige added.

‘Yeah, Melanie had to wake us both up. Turns out we all fell asleep during story time. We didn’t even manage to get Alfie into bed — he was asleep on Paige.’ The whole table were laughing now.

‘Melanie took a picture. Look.’ Sophie was chuckling as she passed her phone around.

‘Aw. You all look so cute. Look at that little dude. He’s so handsome,’ Mya said affectionately.

‘I had no idea you were so nice towards kids,’ Sophie said.

‘I’m not. But that one is a cutie. Takes one to know one, you see.’ Mya grinned.

‘So, Sophie — are you broody now?’ Polly asked. ‘Because being an Auntie would be so nice. Please try for a baby.’

‘We’re still discussing it,’ Sophie said, as Paige’s mind flooded with an image of Sophie and Marcus’ house no longer Instagram-ready and instead covered in toy detritus.

‘Well, keep us in the loop.’ Polly grinned.

‘Right, but stage two, the big reveal. Oh, I’ve added a swipe-up, by the way, and sent the link to you both.’ Sophie looked at Polly and Mya, who in turn dutifully did their own social media stuff. Sophie tapped her screen. ‘Right, I was saying, stage two the big reveal. I’ve broken it down into areas rather than tasks so we can each do one, OK?’

‘Wait, hang on. Are you using the same app as Melanie?’ Paige asked.

‘Of course. She knows what she’s doing,’ Sophie said. ‘Right, so Polly, you’re on music. So, I guess just bring yourself and some musicians, yeah? Paige, you’re on refreshments. I mean I couldn’t have made this any easier for you. Mya, you’re on press. I’m on logistics so like a little stage, lighting and things like that. And all of us are on promotion. Invite everyone, tell everyone. Right then, the only thing we need from Melanie is the date and the go-ahead. And here she is.’

‘Here’s your food, ladies.’ Melanie began placing the meals down.

Polly glanced at Paige who’d become tongue-tied, and then went for it herself. ‘We’re going to organise the big reveal of the mural. You can leave it entirely with us. We just need to know what date to go for and for you to OK our plans.’

‘I’ll have the full plan sent over to you in an email. Once you’ve agreed it you can leave it all to us,’ Sophie said, tapping on her screen.

Melanie didn’t say anything.

Shit, had they overstepped?

Melanie finally said, ‘Why?’

‘Huh? I was just expecting a thank you,’ Mya grumbled, tucking into her food.
