‘Gran!’
There was a bang as Connie shot up, shoving Councillor Houghton and his bare arse onto the floor.
‘Paige! It’s Connie when we’re in company and did you not see the sock on the handle?’
‘Good Lord.’ Paige averted her eyes. ‘I’ll just go out.’ Keeping her head down she tried to grab her wallet and keys.
‘Oh, my phone is ringing,’ Councillor Houghton said and by the sounds of it he began rummaging through his pile of clothes.
Paige realised that it was her. She still had hold of her phone.
‘No, that was me. Never mind.’ Keys, wallet and phone, Paige grabbed her leather jacket by the door and ran downstairs.
Sitting down at the bar, she opened up the girls’ WhatsApp group.
Paige: Anyone around? x
Sophie: I can be — why what’s happened? x
Polly: Oh me too, shall we go and have an impromptu dinner? X
Sophie: Why don’t you all come to mine and I’ll order takeaway x
Polly: Yay see you soon x
Mya: I’m just at the airport, I’ll grab a taxi and be straight over. Be there in forty-five-ish don’t start without me x
Sophie: Mya you’re back! x
Polly: Yay Mya! But you OK Paige? x
Paige: Glad to have you back Mya. Thanks girls x and I’ve just seen Connie being introduced to Councillor Houghton’s voting pencil!
There was silence on the group as they all clearly tried to process this news.
Connie: If you must know Patrick and I were making love.
Wait what? When had Connie been added to the group? Paige sighed, she actually wasn’t that surprised; Mya probably added her.
Paige: Cancel dinner, I don’t think I can eat ever again x
Connie: Oh Paige if anyone should be upset it should be me. You ruined the moment and we were so close x
Nope that was it. Both her eyeballs and her phone needed to be ended.
Connie: Does that mean I’m not invited tonight? X
Paige: No. Also you owe me a new sofa! Sophie I’m on my way x
Sophie: x
Mya: Go get some Connie woohoo x
Paige locked her phone and went to talk to her team, and found India. ‘I’m going out. I’ll be back later.’
‘No worries, boss — you OK?’ India spoke as she restocked.
‘No. Call me if you need anything.’
