Mr Higgins looked up at her and then at the door and back again.

‘Yes all right, I know and you know that it’s Sophie. This one doesn’t count.’ Mr Higgins hopped off and went to his tower.

Paige walked over to the door. The bar staff simply didn’t allow anyone other than her best friends to the door, so no psychic mojo had been needed. Mya although due back soon was still in Vegas, and Polly would have texted first.

‘Oh no,’ Sophie said as soon as she entered the flat. ‘Are you OK? I’ll put the kettle on, unless you want something stronger?’ Sophie’s tone was overly gentle.

‘Stop worrying, I’m fine.’

‘The glare on your face says otherwise. I’m texting Polly.’

‘Why do you need Polly?’

‘You’re watching Hercules, and Mr Higgins is lording it up in his tower. That tells me you’re feeling a little odd, needed comfort, and that you’ve talked to Mr Higgins so much he feels like a human and that his rightful place is residing in a tower.’

‘What? When did you get so insightful?’

Sophie grinned and shrugged her shoulders. ‘Well, Belle downstairs said you were in a definite funk when you passed through the bar, so that may have been a clue, but Hercules confirmed it. Though I would have been more concerned if you were watching Tangled.’

‘Why?’

‘Because of your Rapunzel obsession.’ Sophie shucked off her coat and bag, putting them both on the kitchen table.

‘I’m not obsessed with Rapunzel.’

Sophie grunted, and made a fresh brew while Paige settled herself back down on the sofa, watching Megara reluctantly fall for Hercules.

Sophie came round from the open-plan living space and sat down beside Paige. ‘Enough,’ she proceeded to say.

‘What?’

‘Enough with this. Lately you’ve either been moping around, or you’ve been pissed off and grumpy. Enough.’

‘No I haven’t, and don’t pretend like you understand.’

‘Yes, you have. Don’t get me wrong, you’re never one for all the warm and fuzzies but enough. You’ve temporarily lost something; it will come back to you, of course it will. Now stop being a dick in the meantime.’

‘Is this tough love?’ Paige asked.

‘Yep. I’m trying to channel you. I’m thinking to myself what would Paige say if it was me.’

Paige couldn’t but breathe out a little chuckle and give a little nod. Sophie was a hundred percent correct; Paige could be called upon to cut through the niceties and get to the point.

‘So, wise Sophie, what do I do?’

‘The same thing all of us do, of course — wing it and hope for the best. Make it up as you go along if you have to, or you could try and make a plan, but enough now.’ Sophie lay her hand on Paige’s arm.

Paige grunted. ‘Have I really been that bad?’

‘Yes,’ Sophie said without any hesitation.

Paige thought it through. She’d been so sure she had been successfully keeping this from her friends so as not to worry them, but clearly not. She had been a little growly lately. And fine, yes, she had been rude to Melanie. She’d known it at the time too. Yes, Paige wasn’t naturally one for the warm and fuzzies but she usually tried not to veer straight into bitch.

‘I think I have some amends to make,’ Paige said on a sigh.

‘Let me guess, to Melanie?’

Paige deliberately kept her eyes on the screen while the muses onscreen summarised how Meg really felt. Even if she wasn’t going to admit it to herself.
