‘Listen Paige, thank you for the offer of helping with me on this art project, but I really don’t think it’s going to work, do you?’

‘Why not?’ Paige asked quietly.

‘Why not? Because every time we tried it didn’t work!’ Melanie shouted.

‘Yeah, but it might be easier now.’

‘Easier now?’ Melanie whispered. ‘Easier now what? Your magical vagina has cleared all the tasks off my to-do list, relinquished me of my caring responsibilities, my business responsibilities, my business loan, has it?’ Melanie whisper shouted. But Melanie didn’t really do rage, she couldn’t ever hold the anger for long. And then she reheard what she’d just said to Paige.

Paige stared at her, clearly not having expected that response. But then her face broke into a smile. ‘My magical vagina? Did you really just say that?’ Paige laughed properly now and Melanie couldn’t help but join her.

‘Sorry, I’m just. I’m defensive, I’m sorry.’

‘I get it, you’re embarrassed about being called out over something that wasn’t your fault. You’re no doubt pissed off too, right?’ Paige raised her eyebrow, her eyes still twinkling.

‘Yes. All those things.’ Her feelings now vocalised, quickly began to simmer down.

‘I’m sorry. I promise I can actually help. I really can.’ Paige’s hand landed on Melanie’s arm, the touch sending a shock through her.

‘No, I don’t think it will work.’ Melanie moved her arm away.

‘Look, I will banish my magical vagina back from whence she came. I won’t be a problem, I promise.’

Melanie burst out laughing.

‘Please let me try again,’ Paige said earnestly.

‘Absolutely no banging. Lock that magical vagina away.’

‘We have to stop calling it that. But yes. No more silly business. It’s time to get serious.’

Melanie nodded. ‘OK then, fine, one more chance.’

Paige moved towards the door. ‘I promise to keep my hands to myself. Hope you can say the same.’ She chuckled as she left the room.

Melanie didn’t have the same level of confidence. Her mind constantly filled with images and wishes. Unsurprisingly given that it had been one of the greatest nights of her life. But focus, back on track. What the hell had she just agreed to? Again. It wasn’t going to work and if it didn’t it would be all her fault. She went back to the to-do list.

“REALLY — DO NOT SLEEP WITH PAIGE IT’S NOT WORTH IT.”

It wasn’t worth it. There was too much at stake.

Her phone pinged.

Chapter Twenty

Paige

‘Right, what’s the plan then?’ Connie asked as she stood over the hob.

‘I’m going to her sister’s tonight. There’s a five-book max policy in place with Alfie and then we’re getting everything set up, contacting all the people that have applied and yeah, just getting our shit together.’

And absolutely nothing else, because I’m apparently not worth it.

Paige moved towards the pot on the hob. ‘Who are you making that for?’

‘What’s this? I thought I could make it for you and Melanie. You can’t work on empty stomachs. And I don’t think Melanie looks after herself properly.’ Connie tutted.
