‘Hey. Oh, that’s better already,’ Paige said with a smile and two large bags of food.

‘How hungry are you?’ Melanie asked as Paige turned around, putting the bags on the counter instead of answering. ‘So, I need to go get a shower. I absolutely stink of smoke, is that OK? I’ll just be in and out.’

Paige coughed a little before answering, then turned and looked at Melanie. ‘Yes of course that’s fine. Do what you’ve got to do. I won’t eat all the food while you’re gone. Promise.’

Melanie swallowed, the look of hunger on Paige’s eyes was intense, and Melanie suddenly felt like she was the meal. She ran to her bedroom, grabbed her stuff and quickly hit the bathroom.

Melanie’s hands were shaking as she started the shower and got undressed. Not really sure why, as there was a whole wall separating them, but being naked so close to Paige was having an impact. She pulled out all the grips in her hair, followed by the industrial strength bobbles and groaned with pleasure as her hair fell free. She couldn’t decide which sensation was better, taking off her bra or taking down her hair. She’d have to wash her hair though, which meant she’d have to be even longer. Pulling open the bathroom door a little, she shouted out, ‘I need to wash my hair, sorry, don’t wait for me, get started.’

‘OK. But don’t worry,’ Paige said in her deadpan voice.

Oh God now she was talking to Paige while completely nude, with the door slightly open. She quickly closed the bathroom door before she did something stupid. Her mind had parked up at horny station and seemed unable to move. Melanie returned to the shower, and turning the temperature down, hoped that might help.

Ten minutes later, she pulled on her knickers, black leggings, grey vest top and hoody, wrapping her hair up in a towel. She’d held onto her bra, debating whether or not to put it on for at least three of the ten minutes she’d been indisposed. It wasn’t comfy and she’d had it on all day. Then she figured that if Paige wasn’t there she wouldn’t have put a bra on and so why change for other people. But the second the bathroom door opened, she felt a tingle of excitement. The balcony doors were still open, the apartment cool. And it was the coolness of the apartment, and nothing at all to do with being braless around the hottest woman alive, that was making her feel this way.

Melanie really should have made that shower even cooler.

She looked at the little breakfast bar and saw Paige had set it all up. Even managing to find the big plates, and the cutlery which Melanie had actually unpacked — she wasn’t a complete heathen. All right, she’d needed them for takeaways.

There were cardboard food boxes everywhere and, rather than smelling like an incinerator, the flat now smelt delicious.

As she walked closer she caught Paige’s eye, and nearly laughed at her expression. Paige slowly looked up her body, starting with her bare feet, slowly moving up the casual leggings, but then Paige’s hot gaze continued, and Melanie smiled, but then Paige looked up to her face and scowled.

‘What, what’s wrong?’ Melanie asked. She’d taken off her make-up, but she didn’t think she looked that bad underneath. Her skin was clear and one of the features she was most proud of.

‘Your hair.’ Paige groaned. ‘Just tell me what colour is it? Is it curly? Straight? How long is it?’

Melanie raised an eyebrow. ‘You got a thing for hair there or something, Paige?’

‘Don’t kink shame and no I don’t, but’ — Paige stepped closer — ‘I’ve never seen your hair down. You scrape it back off your face all the time and I was curious.’

Melanie nodded, but didn’t really understand.

Paige stepped back. ‘Right, I’ll just dish up everything yeah?’

‘Sure. Thanks.’ Melanie sat down at the barstool, her knees weak. Paige gestured forward, and she saw another beer was open and ready for her. She helped herself, watching as Paige placed a selection of food onto plates, before putting salad into bowls too. Every now and then she licked her fingers as she went. Melanie was transfixed. There was a lot to take in: Paige’s arms as she lifted food, spooned it out; her hands as she picked out pastry filled things, her tongue appearing when she licked her fingers.

Paige put the plates down, and then quickly swept up the mess and wiped down before she sat down too, and honestly the whole thing was one of the sexiest things Melanie had ever seen. Finally, they were sat side by side at the breakfast bar. Neither said much as they ate through vine leaves and spanakopita. Melanie watching carefully out of the corner of her eyes as Paige’s fingers held the food carefully, her mouth savouring each bite. Melanie was turned on and it was not for turning off.

She ate the salad, the kebab, the rice. There was so much food, and for once she didn’t have to eat it quickly, ready to deal with the next problem, the next task, she could savour each and every bite. She felt like she hadn’t eaten like this in a long time. Her eyes caught on Paige, licking her fingers clean.

‘I think we need to talk,’ Paige said, placing an olive in her mouth.

Melanie nodded, not as fully lucid as she would have liked.

Paige licked her lips. ‘I could be way off here, but I think we are distracting each other.’

Melanie stilled. Where was she going with this? Was she about to be mortified. Oh no, she was about to say something along the lines of, ‘It’s clear you have a crush on me, but this is a working relationship.’ Melanie was quite sure she would die of embarrassment if that happened.

Melanie carried on eating, preferring to say nothing rather than letting her mouth take over, but it was hard to swallow and her heart raced as she focused on the plate in front of her.

‘I would really like to spend the night with you. If you’d like me to. I think . . .’ Paige paused, and Melanie couldn’t breathe, not until Paige finished her sentence. You think what Paige? That we should leave all the food and go to the bedroom? That we should not see each other in any capacity any more? What? Melanie couldn’t remain focused on the plate, she had to look at Paige’s face to try and get a sense of what was about to be said.

Their eyes locked. Melanie had to breathe through her mouth, unable to get any of the oxygen in the room into her lungs.

‘I think that we might both feel less distracted if we dealt with this like adults.’

Dealt with what?
