‘Well, I don’t know what time she’s coming yet bud, you might already be in bed.’

‘Oh.’ Yep, his disappointment was clear.

‘But if that’s the case you want me to get her to go tuck you in or something?’

‘Yes, please.’

Wow that kid fell hard and fast. She could relate.

Once in and green pasta dinner decided on, all Melanie had to do was battle through the million and one questions from Alfie about Paige, the main question being “what time was she coming?”

Melanie pulled out her phone. She was going to have to find out.

Melanie: Alfie wants to know if he will see you tonight x

Melanie put her phone back down on the table and then remembered to move it away from Alfie.

‘Right, let’s get you in the bath and then you can pick out the books you want me to read. How many are we reading tonight?’ Melanie asked as she cleared away his dinner and pulled out his chair.

‘I think ten.’

Melanie raised her eyebrows in surprise — it was normally a lot more than that.

‘And then Paige can read me a hundred.’ That was more like the usual quantity, but really kid you’ve only met her once?

Her phone buzzed and she went to grab it.

Paige: On my way be there in ten x

Melanie: I’ve put the door on the latch let yourself in I’ll be washing my monster x

Oh God Melanie really?

Melanie: Alfie, I meant Alfie, Alfie is the monster x

Why could she not just text like a normal person? Why did it have to go so wrong? And why with Paige and no one else?

Paige: See you soon x

Melanie groaned and chased Alfie upstairs to get him in the bath, and sure enough it was as Alfie was dry and getting into his Star Wars pyjamas that she heard the door shut, lock and Paige shouting out a hello.

‘We’re up here,’ Melanie said as she towel-dried Alfie’s hair.

‘What you sayin?’ he asked.

Melanie said nothing and waited for Paige to appear. Alfie shot up out of her lap and ran straight to the bedroom door, hugging Paige’s legs. Paige looked startled and awkward, and Melanie couldn’t hold in the laughter.

‘Did you bring your cat?’ Alfie asked as he slowly and only partially unwound from Paige’s long legs to look up and ask her.

‘No Alf, he lives at my house. He doesn’t travel a lot.’

‘You brought your purse-in though.’ Alfie pointed at Paige’s chin.

‘Yeah, this comes with me everywhere I go.’

‘Huh?’ Melanie asked.

‘I think he means my piercing. He was asking me about it on Saturday.’
