Again, there was a round of congratulations and Sophie held up her prosecco glass to the screen.

‘Well, seeing as we’re all sharing big news tonight, Marcus and I have been approved. We are now able to officially adopt. In fact, there’s talk of newborn twins but we’re not going to know for a little while and we may need to foster them first. But yeah, we’re going to be parents too.’

There was no longer a dry eye in the house, or houses.

Paige grinned. ‘Alfie is going to be such an awesome cousin to your kids.’

And they all cried a little more.

‘These kids have got the best ever aunties too. The songwriter, the poker-playing entrepreneur, the one with the MBE and the mega celeb.’ Polly’s smile was still so wide.

‘God, it’s so weird to think that only four years ago Sophie and I were squabbling over that tiny garden,’ Mya said.

‘I got you mate’s rates on that garden!’ Sophie shouted in response.

‘It also got you a mega successful business and a husband but sure,’ Mya retorted.

It was a shame they weren’t all together in person, Paige thought. But they had big plans for Christmas this year. They were all, as in partners and family and everyone, coming to Paige and Melanie’s for Christmas dinner and she couldn’t wait. She could admit she’d gotten soppier in her old age, or maybe it was Melanie’s influence but yeah, she was excited. Melanie had even added a new to-do list to her app so she was obviously excited as well.

‘I wish we were all together in person right now,’ Polly said.

‘I know,’ said Mya. ‘One of you could be holding my hair back for me.’

Polly rolled her eyes. ‘Now that I have definitely done before.’

‘I have to go now, I think I actually do need to go throw up. Love you girls, see you same time next week, yeah?’ Mya said to a chorus of agreement. ‘Congrats again, Sophie and Polly.’ With a belch Mya signed off.

‘Eeeek,’ Polly squealed.

‘I need to take my wife away now, ladies. Sorry, love you all. Come on, Mrs Polly Johnston,’ Bailey demanded, a huge grin on his face.

‘I told you I’m keeping my name.’

‘Come on, we can argue about this in bed,’ Bailey said.

‘Love you, girls. Bye.’ Polly signed off with a sigh that suggested things had already started.

‘You’re going to be an awesome mum, Soph,’ Paige said.

‘Don’t, you’ll set me off again. But come on, as always you haven’t told us what’s going on with you.’

‘Well, the return-to-work scheme with the Domestic Abuse agencies is all going well, and the work with Selena is . . .’

Paige looked up as the door to the flat opened and Melanie walked in. She smiled at Paige, and Paige’s heart did that leap thing it always did. She watched as Melanie took off her work rucksack, putting it on the table, kicked off her shoes and then she did the bit that Paige tried her hardest to witness each night. Melanie took the ties out of her hair and shook it free. Then Melanie would do what she always did; she would turn around and go and make herself a drink, unaware Paige was watching the whole thing with complete adoration.

Paige looked down at the screen and saw Sophie had been watching Paige the whole time.

‘I’m really happy, Soph. Just really happy.’

Sophie smiled again, and Paige swore she could feel the warmth.

‘Love you, Paige.’

‘Love you too, Sophie. See you soon, yeah?’

‘Of course. Love to Melanie. BYE, MELANIE!’ Sophie screamed.

‘I’ll text you later, Sophie, there’s a new organisation app you’re going to love!’ Melanie shouted back.
