Again, my silence became my undoing. Sophia’s eyes shot all the way open.

“Holy shit, you dirty bitch!” she screamed. “You’re screwing his friend?”

“No!” I cried defensively. “I mean… well…”

“You are!” She dropped everything. “Holy—”

“It’s not like you think,” I cut her off. “It… well, the way it happened was—”

“I’m not judging, mind you,” Sophia interjected quickly. “I’m just surprised, that’s all. It’s not like the two of you are committed or anything. But… his friend?”

I let out an exasperated sigh. How could I possibly explain this? The answer was, I couldn’t.

“It’s… complicated.”

“Again?” she laughed. “More complications?”

“Look—”

“I thought you said you loved Adrian?”

I paused for a moment, then shrugged. “I do.”

“And does he love you?”

“Yes,” I said without hesitation. “He always has.”

“Then what’s the problem?” Sophia pressed. “Is he icing you out? Doesn’t want to commit?”

“No. It’s not that.”

“Then what would make you—”

“He knows about Jax,” I blurted in frustration.

I hadn’t meant to put it exactly like that. But there, the cat was out of the bag. Sort of.

“Actually,” I added, “Jax and I slept together before Adrian and I did.”

Sophia’s expression was caught between shock and admiration. On pure reflex she reached for her wine, realized the glass was empty, then stopped.

“So how did Adrian find out?” she asked.

“Jax told him.”

She balked. “Holy shit, was he angry?”

“Actually, he wasn’t.”

“Jealous, then?” asked Sophia. “He had to be jealous.”

“No.”

“No?” she repeated. “Seriously?”

Setting aside the suit I was working on, I took my own wine glass and poured half of what I had into her empty one. Then I took a long, emboldening sip.

“Look, it’s a weird situation. A unique situation. But yes, I’m sleeping with both of them. And yes, they know about each other.”
