“Soo…” she said, casually sipping her coffee. “The demon queen was over at Adrian’s the other night.”

I let my eyes go comically wide. “Lolth?”

“No, not that demon queen,” she chuckled, appreciating the Dungeons & Dragons reference. “Although that would be pretty fucking epic.”

“It sure would,” I agreed.

“I’m talking about Erika. Adrian’s ex.”

I nodded, finally pushing my plate away. “Oh, I know who you’re talking about. You gonna eat that?”

Harper laughed and shook her head. I stole the rest of her side of hash browns.

“I heard she rattled you.”

“A little,” she said, toughening up. “But only because I wasn’t expecting her. That won’t happen again.”

“I bet it won’t,” I smiled.

She looked abruptly introspective, like there was something more to say. I didn’t press. Instead, I put my hand over hers.

“Hey…” I said gently. “We’re wiped. The both of us.”

“Yeah.”

“What do you say when you drop me off, you come inside for a few hours? My bed is pretty nice.”

“Oh, I already know,” she laughed. “Remember?”

“Yeah, but you haven’t really slept in it,” I answered her with a wry smile. “And that’s what I’m offering. You come in, we pull the curtains tight, get the room all nice and dark and warm… and then we strip down and snuggle up beneath the blankets.”

“Uh huh.”

“And then we sleep,” I went on. “Just sleep. Holding each other.”

Harper let out a dreamy sigh. “I gotta admit, that sounds nice.”

“It does?”

“In theory, sure.”

“What?” I grinned. “You don’t think I can keep my hands off you?”

She returned my grin with a smirk. “It’s not your hands I’m worried about.”

I shrugged, let go, and leaned back in my chair. Just then the waitress caught my eye. I made the universal chicken-scratch-in-the-air sign for the check.

“Alright,” I shrugged. “Suit yoursel—”

“But let’s do it anyway,” said Harper, flashing her blue eyes my way. Her look was even flirtier than mine.

“What’s the worst that could happen?”

HARPER

I had mixed emotions, walking the hall to Adrian’s apartment. On one hand I was excited to see Brayden, and even more thrilled to see his father. He’d been torn away from me so quickly after we’d gotten together. I’d missed the hell out of him.
