Purely out of reflex, I went to extend my legs over his, like we’d done hundreds of times before. But that was so many years ago. I stopped myself halfway.

“Here.”

He reached out and took my legs, putting them exactly where they always went. As I settled back into the arm of the couch, his hand began kneading my foot.

“I’ll just say this,” Adrian began absently. “It won’t ever happen again. She took the baby during my visitation, and I’ve already documented it with the police and my lawyer.”

My eyebrow arched. “The police?”

“Nothing big,” Adrian said dismissively. “But when she breaks custody rules, it’s always good to get a report. With enough reports, the judge can change things. Maybe get her to stop the ridiculous behavior.”

He wasn’t just kneading now, he was full-blown rubbing my foot, rolling the ball of his thumb into the hollow just above my heel. I’d forgotten how good he was at it, too. As the tension left, and pleasure flooded in to take its place, my eyes half-closed in pure ecstasy.

“The funny part is, I would’ve given her the baby if she’d only just called me,” he said. “I’ve never kept Brayden from his mother, ever. And I never will.”

“You…” I sighed. “You’re very…”

God, I was in absolute heaven now. Drifting through clouds of pure—

“How was it tonight, watching the both of them?” he asked.

I took a sip of my wine and sighed into the glass. “Fun, actually,” I smiled. “They’re great kids, and they adore each other. They feed off each other, too.”

Adrian’s handsome face broke into a fatherly smile that was overtly sexy, even if he didn’t know it. “Yeah, well thanks for taking them on such short notice. Especially with Jax getting called in for someone else’s shift.”

He’d set his wine glass down, now. Hopefully so he could work my foot with two hands.

“How was work for you?” I somehow managed to ask.

He shrugged his massive shoulders. “Work was good. I’m still getting into the client side of things, which is all about meeting people and making contacts. It requires a lot of face time, though. A lot of late dinners, and getting drinks afterward…”

“Sounds a lot more glamorous than what I’m doing.”

“To an extent,” Adrian agreed. “It takes me away from here in the evenings, though. I love that I get to spend time with Brayden during the day, but I miss putting him down at night. He’s always cutest right before he falls asleep.”

Adrian lifted his glass again and took a long, deep pull. When he returned it to the coffee table, he began rubbing my foot with both hands.

“Amy is history, by the way,” he said, casually.

His words didn’t register immediately. When they did, they tore me rudely from my rapturous haze.

“Wait, what?”

“We only had a few dates, and the dates we had pretty much sucked,” he chuckled. “We have almost nothing in common. Not like you and me.”

His eyes found mine as he realized what he’d just said. I watched his skin go flush.

“Besides, she never stopped chewing that fucking gum.”

I blinked a few times, then broke out laughing, almost snorting my wine. “What was up with that gum!?”

He shook his head and laughed along with me. “I wish I knew. It wasn’t just the gum, though. It was all those—”

“Bracelets? Necklaces?”

He chuckled and shook his head. “Too many, huh?”

“Are you kidding? Jax and I refer to her as Jingle Jangles.” At that bit of information, I could tell he looked almost embarrassed. “Why did you even date her in the first place?”
