My pride swelled even more, but I couldn’t focus on enjoying it. And that’s because I was too fixated on Preston’s mostly-naked body.

Damn…

I’d gotten a little excited, watching him strip down to his boxers so I could put the leads on him. I’d gotten even hotter applying the temporary patches to his bare stretches of beautifully-striated muscle. His mocha skin was smooth and blemishless. His six-pack abdominals weren’t just well-defined, they were hard, sculpted works of individual art.

He might’ve noticed how badly my fingers trembled, affixing the patches there. Because he’d covered my wrist with his, flashed those bright white teeth, and gently dragged my hand downward… over the lower part of his belly.

Then he winked at me, and I actually felt myself get wet.

I’d put patches on his broad chest, the wings of his rib cage, and the sides of his warm, beautiful neck. Flashbacks came; moving images of our night together. All the kissing there, on his neck and mine. All the goosebumps that erupted across our bodies, right before we came together, stripped down, and fucked each other’s brains out.

I hadn’t gotten to really see his body in action. Not twisting and jumping and swinging a sword, like he was right now. For the first few minutes I nervously watched the leads, keeping an eye on a separate monitor to see how the reactional data was being fed back real-time. But very soon I became mesmerized, just watching the movements of his body.

If Jax noticed, it was hard to tell. He was his usual dickish self, throwing back beers and dropping crude comments as I applied the leads to Preston’s inner and outer thighs. Eventually these leads would be fed into a full-body suit, and that suit would become the last generation prototype. Jax, of course, couldn’t see the light at the end of that tunnel. And so he made even more comments about Preston looking like a naked porcupine.

The screen changed again, and a yellow light filled the living room. The dragon breathed. Preston cried out. The flames turned to smoke, and the smoke formed the words GAME OVER.

“You’re barbecue!” Jax laughed.

Preston’s shoulders were slumped in defeat as he removed the headset. I took it from him, and began disconnecting the leads.

“Don’t feel bad,” I told him. “No one beats the dragon on the first try.”

“Nobody, huh?” he smirked. “Did you beat him?”

“Well yeah,” I chuckled. “But I wrote the code for most of his behavioral patterns, so…”

A few minutes later the last of the haptic patches had been removed, and the lead wires had all been hung in their proper places on the master board. Preston searched his body for any I might’ve missed before pulling on his shirt. When he stepped into his jeans again, I actually mourned the moment.

“That was really something spectacular,” Preston swore. “And trust me, I’ve played on a lot of VR systems. Oculus. Valve. Sony. Meta…”

“Well that’s the plan,” I admitted. “Once I get the tech right, I can pitch it to the bigger companies. The hope is, at least one of them should bite.”

He shook his head in slow admiration. Face to face, I could see my pride reflected back in his smooth brown eyes.

“Bite?” he murmured. “Harper, they’re going to be fighting over you.”

I shrugged. “Maybe.”

“You’re going to be rich.”

I swallowed dryly. “Well, it’s not like—”

A loud noise turned us both in the direction of the couch. Jax was face down, passed out, and snoring loudly.

“Wow,” I said. “That’s incredible.”

“What is?”

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen him with his mouth shut.”

Preston laughed. “In his defense, he’s not even that drunk. He worked two doubles in the past three days, and we came straight here from his last shift.”

“I see. Does he always sound like a chainsaw when he sleeps?”

“Not always,” Preston smirked. “Sometimes he sounds more like a broken lawnmower.”

I wrinkled my nose at a particularly loud exhale. “How do you live with this?”
