“That’s right!” John says.

I gaze at Dana as I bring her hand to my lips. “I know she is,” I say before kissing the back of her hand.

Our mothers swoon. Courtney does, too.

Violet just stares.

“Hey, can we go now?” Ben asks. “I didn’t want to say anything before, but being this close to a dead body kinda freaks me out.”

“Me, too,” Ty says.

“Yes, please.” My mother dabs her eyes. “Let’s get a move on, shall we?”

Ty slides back into his spot in front of me, trading places with Courtney again while the others disperse behind us.

Dana’s hand lingers in mine until the last possible moment, tugged out of reach by Violet and my sister. But that’s fine.

We have all the time in the world.

And I won’t waste a moment of it.

“All right,” my father says, the leader’s voice returning. “Delta Xi!”

“Delta Xi!” all of us roar.

We walk together.

Rest in peace, Grandpa.

CHAPTER 43

DANA

The End of Their First Semester

“Dana.”

“Hm?”

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Don’t I seem fine?”

“Not really.”

“Why not?”

“Because you’re breaking my fingers.”

“Oh!” I jolt, releasing my iron grip on Connor’s hand. “I’m sorry!”

He chuckles as he flexes his digits. “It’s all right.”

“I’m sorry,” I say again as I glance around the auditorium. Third row center with several reserved open seats around us. “This place is… really crowded.”
