“Daisy,” I answer.

He faces forward. “Dammit.”

“I love her,” I say to Alex and Ben. “We want to be together, but we want you to be okay with it first.”

“It would have been nice to know all of this before we found her half-naked in your closet, man,” Ben says.

“I know.”

“Wait,” John says, his voice edged with anger. “She was naked?”

“I never thought I’d act on these feelings!” I say. “I thought it couldn’t happen.”

“But it did,” Alex snaps.

“Because she asked me to. I couldn’t say no.”

“Also would have been nice to know,” Ben says.

“I know, but…” I exhale hard. “It’s like your dad told me the other night over a shot of vodka. Being in love makes you do stupid shit.”

“Hold on,” Dad says, looking at John over the casket. “You gave my son booze?”

John glares right back at him. “Your son deflowered my daughter.”

Dad nods. “I’ll let mine slide.”

“Uh-huh.”

“I don’t care about love. Love doesn’t matter here,” Alex growls as he adjusts his stance. “Brothers don’t mess around with each other’s sisters. It’s about the principle!”

“If we all lived by principle, none of us would even be here!” I argue. “You don’t date your coach’s daughter, but my dad did. You don’t date your students, but your mom did.”

“He’s got you there, boys,” John says.

“You don’t sleep with your dad’s employees, but check out Courtney!”

Dad’s head swivels around. “What?”

I wince. “Nothing, Dad. Don’t worry about it. Look, guys…” I catch my breath, my grip strength running out. “Please, just… she makes me so happy. I make her happy. Can’t you guys see that, at least?”

“Aw, fuck it,” Ben mutters. “I’m in. You have my blessing.”

“No!” Alex grunts with frustration. “Seriously, dude?”

Ben shrugs his unencumbered shoulder. “If we keep this up, they’ll both be all weird and whiny about it and I don’t want to deal with that. Do you?”

“No, but?—”

“And it’s not like we can avoid either of them. We’re all Northies. We’re Bearhawks. We’re Delta Xi and next year when we all move into that house together, I want to have the best years of my life and I can’t do that without Connor. I don’t want to, either, so…” Ben looks back at me and nods. “You have my blessing.”

I smile with relief. “Thank you, Ben.”

“You hurt her, I’ll kill you.”

“Proud of you, Ben,” John says.

“Thanks, Dad,” he replies.
