“Yes.”

“Good.”

Feet shuffle down the stairs behind me, the soft step of a much smaller Kirby. When Dana reaches the ground floor, she spots me sitting at the kitchen counter. Her brow furrows as she looks at both of us, her ire directed toward her father.

“Dad, what are you doing?” she asks.

John waves a hand. “It’s all right,” he says, the tension gone from his stance now. “I was just sharing a drink with one of the newest members of Alpha Delta Xi. Right, Connor?”

“Right,” I say, gesturing at our empty shot glasses.

Dana eyes us suspiciously as she wanders over to stand beside me. “Okay…”

“Now, I’m gonna go get changed before heading to campus,” he says as he walks to her, then looks at me. “You’re welcome to hang out for a little while if you want.”

“Thank you,” I say.

“For a little while,” he adds in a sharper tone.

I bow my head. “Yes, sir.”

John touches Dana’s shoulder before leaning in and kissing the side of her head. Then, he holds up his pinkie. I watch Dana as she notices, her eyes widening for a second before she wraps her fingers around it and squeezes.

“Thank you, Dad,” she whispers.

He smiles, then steps away. “Have a good night, guys,” he says.

“Yeah, have fun at the game,” she says, her stunned eyes following him as he walks toward the stairs. Once he’s gone, she looks at me and whispers, “What the fuck?”

“It’s okay,” I say, reaching out with one arm to hug her waist. “We were just talking.”

“Talking?”

I shrug. “Talking.”

“Talking?”

“Talking.”

She sighs nervously. I laugh.

“It’s okay,” I say again, rubbing her back. “He’s okay. With us.”

“Really?” she asks, that beautiful smile returning.

“He didn’t like us lying to him, but as long as we don’t do that again, I think he’ll be cool.”

She exhales, relieved. “I guess now we just have Alex and Ben to worry about.”

I look at my empty shot glass. Sharing a drink with one of the newest members of Alpha Delta Xi. Feels pretty good to hear that, actually.

“I’ll figure them out,” I say. “Don’t worry.”

“I’m not worried,” she says, leaning close. “You still going?”

I look at her lips. So pink and tempting, but it wouldn’t be right.

Fix this first.
