She chuckles softly. “They’re so gonna kick his ass.”

I cringe. “I know.”

“Does he?”

“Yes.” I sigh. “He didn’t want to at first, but I… talked him into it.”

“Talked him into what, exactly?”

I bite my tongue, but… we’re in too deep now. “Taking my virginity,” I answer.

Jacinda lets that hang for a moment. “Well, has he?” she asks, needing to know more.

“No.” I scratch a non-existent itch on the back of my neck. “Tonight is supposed to be…”

Her mouth sags again. “Oh.”

“But we’ve done other things,” I mutter. “Not sure what counts, though…”

“Well, what are you still doing here?” she asks with a devious smirk. “Go figure it out.”

I glance down the street, but they’re long gone. “He’s kinda busy at the moment.”

“So, what’s the plan? You waiting for the all-clear? Sneaking out of here under cover of night? What?”

I squint, surprised by her enthusiasm. “You’re being really cool about this, Jacinda,” I say.

Jacinda looks at me, her expression still so casual. “I’m not going to let a high school relationship determine the rest of my life,” she says. “Connor and I had fun, mostly. Couldn’t have asked for a better first boyfriend, but it’s over and I’m happy he’s moved on. We both have.”

It’s a good attitude, but my chest still clenches slightly. “Then he was your first, too?”

“No,” she answers. “There was someone before him.”

I almost don’t ask. “Anyone I know?”

Her eyes narrow, but her lips curl. “Well, let’s just say there’s more than one reason I’m not Team Floyd.”

My jaw drops. She laughs.

“Come on, sister.” She pushes off the banister to stand. “Let’s go party.”

CHAPTER 32

CONNOR

Our sneakers squeak against the shiny, hard floor. My heart pounds in my chest, but I don’t dare slow down. There’s no time to catch our breaths, not with everything we’ve ever wanted on the line.

We round the corner — and run into a dead end.

“Fuck!” Alex shouts, our plastic bag of loot hanging off his shoulder.

“I could have sworn it was this way,” I say, my lungs on fire as I scan the rec center hallway. “I hate this fucking building.”

“Ten minutes, thirty seconds…” Ben says, the light of his phone illuminating his face.

“Okay. So, we go back and take a right instead?” Alex says.

I nod. “I think so.”
