Page 268 of Talk Swoony to Me

There is no way I’ll ever be this good.

I deflate. Stupid intrusive thought.

But it’s not wrong.

Knock. Knock.

Wow. Dad actually knocked for once.

Wait, no…

I flinch, my head swiveling toward the sound as light fear jolts through my chest. That sound… isn’t coming from the door.

It’s my window.

A face stares at me from the darkness. I nearly scream, but it’s familiar. Friendly.

Handsome.

“Connor,” I scold as I hop off my bed, my nerves trembling. I reach the window and unlock it before sliding it upward. “What are you doing?”

“Did I scare you?” he asks, more concerned than amused.

“A little, yeah.”

“Sorry.”

I take a breath. Only slightly shallow, but it doesn’t linger that way. Won’t need my inhaler for a little startle like that.

“It’s fine.” I sit on the bench beneath the window, eying the large tree outside and the air between it and the sliver of roof Connor’s balancing on. “What are you doing here?”

“I needed…” A heavy pause. “I don’t know. I just needed to talk to… someone.”

“So, you climbed my tree?”

“Yeah.”

“We have a door. I have a phone.” I lean back, too tempted to look down. “Would you please get in here? You’re really freaking me out.”

Connor glances behind me, his eyes lingering on my bed. “No, I…” He flexes his jaw as he shifts his feet. “Do you wanna go for a ride?”

“A ride?”

“Yeah. A ride.”

I hope he’ll say more, that he’ll explain that pained look in his eyes, but Connor doesn’t even glance up.

“Connor, are you okay?” I ask, my chest clenching.

He swallows. “I just… I wanna take a ride.” He locks eyes with me. A silent, begging glance. “Will you come with me? Please?”

Something’s wrong.

Something’s definitely wrong.

“Sure,” I say. “We can take my car.”

“I’ll meet you down there.”
