“Connor.”

I pause with one hand on the glass.

Dana stares at me, her hands upturned to question me. “What are you doing?” she asks, her voice barely audible.

I gesture at the window. She rolls her eyes.

“Wait,” she says, angling her ear back to the door.

After a minute, the same heavy footsteps climb back up the stairs. I hold my breath as I join her, waiting for him to pass by. Of course, Dana’s room is the last one in the hall before the master bedroom. Gotta keep their precious baby girl as close by as possible.

Finally, a door closes.

We relax, or as much as two lifelong friends who just kissed for the first time can relax. Hell, just kissing would be bad enough.

I want more.

“You should go,” Dana says.

I ease a step back, nodding.

She turns the knob, motioning me to the other side of the door. I move out of the way as she silently opens it and sticks her head out to make sure the coast is clear.

“Go,” she says, stepping back in.

I pause, not wanting to leave yet. “Goodnight, Dana,” I say.

She looks at me, her cheeks still flushed, her eyes still glazed from so much Princess Punch. “Goodnight, Connor.”

I escape into the hall, quiet as a mouse… and hard as a rock. Dana closes the door behind me and I linger in place until it’s comfortable to walk again. Until my lips stop throbbing. Until my heart stops trying to escape through my sternum.

I can’t believe I let that happen.

I can’t believe how much I don’t care that I let that happen.

I can’t believe how much I want it to happen again.

The house is silent, the light whisper of my shoes on the stairs the only sound as I walk down to the first floor. Not that I can even hear anything at all other than the blood still pounding in my ears. Dana’s still around me. Her scent. Her flavor. Her?—

A light turns on in the kitchen ahead of me. I startle as she does, Rose Kirby placing a hand over her heart as she flinches in the light of the open refrigerator.

Fuck.

“Connor.” She chuckles as she retrieves a bottle of water from the door with one hand and holds her robe closed with the other. “You spooked me.”

“I’m sorry, Dr. Kirby,” I say, my pulse returning with a vengeance. Fuck, how did we not hear her going downstairs, too? “I didn’t know anyone was still up.”

“I didn’t know you were staying over tonight.”

“Oh, I’m not. I was just dropping Dana off.”

She bites the inside of her cheek. “Is she okay?” she asks.

Fuuuck.

“Well, I… she…” I hesitate. "She’s just really tired.”

“Ah.” A smile of understanding. “I see my daughter enjoyed her first frat party.”
