But that thought isn’t as frightening as it was before.

“Dana.”A strong hand touches my arm. “Are you okay?”

I glance up, Connor’s protective presence overwhelming. “I’m okay,” I say, my smile returning. Or did it ever leave?

“What did he do to you?” he asks.

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing. We were just talking,” I say.

“Talking?”

“Talking.”

“Talking?”

“Yes. Talking.”

He flexes his jaw in disbelief as he glares at the grass below, his eyes targeting Emerson’s back. I don’t blame him. I’m not sure I believe it myself. Emerson Floyd. Rehabilitated and making amends. It’s a tough act to swallow, but as a caterpillar-turned-butterfly myself, I can’t fault his effort — as strange as it seems.

Are you hitting on me, Emerson?

So very strange.

I lean against the rail, the urge to lie down overtaking me as a full-body yawn makes it hard to stand.

“Want me to drive you home?” Connor asks.

Another breath and I rise, nodding.

CHAPTER 14

CONNOR

I stop the car at the crosswalk before continuing forward onto her street. It’s a place I’ve walked or rode down a thousand times in my life, but tonight is a first.

Never had to sneak Dana Kirby inside because she’s drunk before.

Dana sits in the passenger’s seat, her head resting against the window. She fell asleep the moment she sat down. Her hands lie limp in her lap. Her legs lie askew, her knees pointed in my direction, the tops of her knee-high socks somewhat ruffled at the top. Between them and her skirt, a few inches of exposed skin along her outer thigh.

Forcing my eyes on the road, I clear my throat. “Dana,” I say.

Silence.

“Dana.” Eyes on the road, man. “We’re almost there.”

She stirs, but her head never leaves the window.

“Fuck,” I whisper, hoping she’s not too messed up. If I get caught dragging her through the house, she’ll be in deep shit. I doubt her parents will like that, and I promised her dad I’d look out for her. Not about to let him down. “Dana.”

Dana turns her head, her eyes taking their time in opening. “Connor?” she asks, confused.

“Yeah. It’s me.”

Sitting up, she looks out her window. “How did I get here?”
