“And you had to close your bedroom door for that?” I ask.

Dana glares at me again. Doesn’t feel good.

Alex points a finger. “He’s got a point there.”

“I alwaysclose my door. It’s habit!” Dana exhales hard. “We weren’t doinganything. We’re just friends.”

“A likely story,” Ben says, his smirk giving away his true thoughts. He believes her. Alex does, too.

But they don’t know what I know.

“What is Dad doing on campus?” Dana asks, leaping on a subject change.

“Uh...” Ben playfully scolds her. “He went to our first scrimmage, actually. Mom did, too.”

“And Aunt Daisy,” Alex says, matching his brother’s tease perfectly.

“Thanks so much for the support, sister. It means a lot.”

Dana rolls her eyes. “It was just a scrimmage.”

“It was more than that,” I hear myself say, drawing their eyes. “It...” I stutter, still hung up on thisDylanguy to remember what Hunter said before. “It’s a... legacy thing.”

“A legacy thing?” she repeats.

“Yeah, it’s our legacy,” I say, somehow more confident. “Our fathers played there. It’s important.”

“Yeah!” Ben says. “Where’s your school spirit, Dana?”

Alex performs a serious nod, his shoulders moving along with his neck. “Yeah! Would it kill you to have some Bearhawk pride?”

“I have plenty of Bearhawk pride,” she says. “It’s just reserved for Saturday nights... along with the rest of the college football-loving world. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some reading to do.”

Dana walks around us, heading toward the stairs to go back to her room.

Alex scoffs. “Hey, you don’t seriously think you’re going to the Delta Xi party, do you?” he asks her.

“Uh...”She pauses at the bottom of the stairs, hands strongly perched on her hips. “Yeah. I do. It’s the stick-em party for the whole Greek system.”

“Stick-em party?” Ben asks.

“The meet and greet where pledges can meet with current members.” She pauses, waiting for an acknowledgment on our faces that doesn’t quite surface. “They give you stickers? Get five and you get to go to the house’s welcome brunch on Saturday?” Still nothing. “There are fliers all over campus. Don’t you guys read... anything?”

“No,” Alex says.

“Well, I’m going so I can get into the brunch at Beta Kappa,” Dana says.

Alex laughs. “Oh, come on, Dana. We all know that’s not happening.”

“What’s not happening?”

“You being a Beta Kappa. There’s no way.”

“Why not?”

“Because sororities are for out-going girls. Cool girls. Pretty girls. Not girls like...” He lazily gestures at her. “You.”

“Alex,” I say, even I knowing his words were a step too far.
