I chuckle. “Oh, I am a bad influence on you...”

Heidi looks up and kisses my chin, prompting me to look down into those gorgeous golden pools as she smiles.

Heidi. Heidi Newbury.

If I had known that she was my best friend’s little sister when I met her...

I wouldn’t have done a thing differently.

Not one damn thing.

CHAPTER 53

DREW

Three Years Later

I hold the red tie up to my reflection in the mirror. Then the blue tie. Then the red tie again. No, definitely blue. But wait...

“No tie.”

I turn around to see Seth lurking in my bedroom doorway. “No tie?” I repeat.

“Yeah, ditch it,” he says, stepping inside as if we still share a room. “Gotta look natural, you know? You get all fancy on her and she’ll know something is up.”

“Or she’ll think I just wanted to look nice for her birthday dinner.”

“Dude, it’s Heidi,” he simply says.

I raise a brow. “Good point.”

I toss both ties onto the back of my desk chair and stare at myself in the mirror again. Maybe the suit jacket is more than enough. I pop my collar, then promptly put it back down. Nope, don’t do that. Never do that.

Relax, I tell myself. You got this.

Seth sits down on the corner of my bed. He leans forward in that casual but also not so casual way. Clearly, something is on his mind.

“What’s up, Seth?” I ask as I tweak my hair in the mirror.

“Nothing,” he says, clearing his throat. “Just feeling a little nervous about tonight.”

“You’re feeling nervous?” I quip.

“Not as much as you, obviously. Maybe. Probably.” He runs a hand through his hair. “So, I’m bringing a date to dinner, as you know...”

I glance at his reflection. “As I know...”

“And I’m feeling a little nervous about it,” he says again. “I really like this girl and it’s the first time I’ve... unveiled her, so to speak. I just want you guys to like her, that’s all.”

I nod in understanding. Seth has been seeing this mystery girl for weeks now, somehow sneaking her in and out of our apartment under my nose. Heidi and I have repeatedly tried — and failed — to catch a glimpse of her. Tonight, that mystery will finally be solved.

“What’s not to like about her?” I ask.

He thinks for a moment. “Nothing,” he says, his eyes warm with genuine affection. “She’s gorgeous and wicked smart and funny and... gorgeous. I really like her.”

“Yeah, I can tell. Never seen you this fucked up about a girl before.”

“Oh, fucked up is exactly the way I’d describe it, too.”
