“Actually, Remi’s here.” Ruby pulled out her phone. “He got an early flight. He’s here. He just landed.”

“Really?” He’d just finished a training course back East. He’d planned to fly back to California and then fly here with Misty.

“Yeah,” Ruby confirmed.

“I have to go potty!” Harper jumped up and down.

“Let’s go.” Taylor held out her hand, and the two walked down the corridor.

“Did he mention he was going to try and get an earlier flight?” I asked Ruby as we scanned the passengers.

“No.” She shook her head before pointing. “There he is.”

I looked in the direction her finger was pointing, and I saw Remi walking toward us. Alone.

“I thought Misty was coming.”

“So did I,” she said under her breath before rushing up and hugging her brother.

The two embraced, and I found myself curious to see how he would greet me. Even though Remi and I had spoken a lot since he’d found out that Ruby and I were together, this was the first time we’d seen each other. I knew he said he was okay with it, but I wondered if there would be any weirdness between us.

After greeting Ruby, he looked at me, and for a second I thought he was going to give me shit, but instead, he reached out his arm and pulled me into a hug. “Hey, man. Good to see you.”

“You, too.” I patted him on the back as relief washed over me.

Besides Harper, Ruby was the most important thing to me, so even if Remi did have a problem with us being together, it wouldn’t have changed anything. But I was happy that he really seemed to be okay with it.

“Where’s Misty?” Ruby asked.

“Oh, she’s not coming. We broke up.”

Ruby’s eyes shot to mine. I gave her a look that clearly communicated I had no clue what he was talking about.

“You did? When?” she followed up.

“Yesterday.”

“Are you okay?” Ruby rubbed his arm.

He grinned as his lips turned up in a slight grin. “Yeah, I am. Actually, I met?—”

“Daddy, can we go get banana splits when we get home?” Harper asked as she ran up behind me.

I turned, and Taylor shrugged as she walked a few steps slower than my daughter. “I told her to ask you because I didn’t know…” Her words trailed off as she glanced over my shoulder.

“Taylor, this is my brother, Remi!” Ruby excitedly made the introductions. “Remi, this is Tay?—”

“We—” Remi started to speak, but Taylor spoke over him. Loudly.

“Hi, Remi. It’s nice to meet you, finally.” Taylor’s tone was formal as her back straightened and she held out her hand. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

The only time I’d ever heard Taylor speak like that was to her superiors. I glanced back at Remi. His brow was furrowed in confusion for several beats before his face relaxed into what I called his game-on expression. I’d seen it countless times when he was on the mound facing a tough opponent and bases were loaded.

A slow, half-grin lifted as he held out his arm. “It’s nice to finally meet you, too, Taylor.”

As Taylor and Remi shook hands, my eyes bounced between them like I was watching a tennis match at the U.S. Open. No words were being spoken, but there was definitely a ball being served and then hit into the other's court. I was waiting to see who was going to reach game point first.

“Hi, Uncle Remi!” Harper interrupted the match as she lunged herself at Remi, who dropped Taylor’s hand and scooped her up in his arms. Harper and Remi had gotten quite close over the past few months over FaceTime.
