“Once. I don’t go online much.”

“I know. You’re not on any social media.”

“No, I’m not. How did you know I wasn’t?—"

“I’ve checked. A lot.”

“You have?”

“Yeah. I wanted to, you know, see how you were.”

“You could have asked Remi.”

She let out a little laugh and shook her head slightly. “No, I couldn’t.”

Right. Because why would Remi want his little sister asking about his friend, who was a decade older than her. I knew this conversation was heading into dangerous territory. I could feel the shift in energy between us.

She glanced down at her hands, which were holding the glass of water on her lap. She took a deep breath, and she squared her shoulders. “Can I tell you something?”

“You can tell me anything.” I wanted to know everything she was thinking, feeling, needing.

Her eyes met mine, and I felt like the tension between us was a rubber band about to snap. “No, I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.” The three words came out like a challenge.

One she met.

“I’ve had a pretty big crush on you…well, pretty much my entire life.”

“You have?” I repeated as my heart thundered in my chest.

She dipped her head and brushed her hair behind her ear. “This is embarrassing but…I used to think that all these years I had built you up into something that wasn’t real, you know. You were fictional, like Christian Grey or Jake Ryan.”

“Jake Ryan?”

“He’s the guy from Sixteen Candles. I loved that movie when I was young. And Christian Grey is?—”

“Fifty Shades, yeah, I know.” Tay had been obsessed with the books when they came out.

“Have you read the books or seen the movies?” she asked.

“No, but I think everyone’s heard of it.”

“Right.” She took another sip of her water before setting it down on the coffee table.

“Have you read the books or seen the movies?” I had a pretty good idea of what the stories were about. The thought of Ruby indulging in that form of entertainment was something that I knew shouldn’t, but really turned me on.

“I read the books. They were really good.” Her cheeks flushed, and she licked her lips.

My heart pounded heavily in my chest as my dick stirred in my pants for the third time that evening. I shifted in my seat. Ruby was a snake charmer. Each time she smiled, spoke, or I was even in the same room, my trouser snake wanted to come out and play.

This conversation was going to cross a line. I could feel it. The right thing to do would be to call it a night.

“It’s getting late,” I said as I stood.

Ruby spoke at the same time I did, blurting out nine words in the time it took me to say three.

“You’re the only person I think about when I…” her words trailed off as she also stood.
