“You’re right. I do own that shirt.”

Becca sets her cup down and stares hard at me.

“So, what’s with the no caffeine?”

I sigh. There’s no use putting it off. This is why I wanted to talk to her.

“I shouldn’t have any.”

Waiting for her to catch my drift, I raise my eyebrows at her and then look down at my stomach.

It’s the longest few seconds because dawning realization passes over her face, and Becca’s eyes go wide.

“You’re not.”

I nod my head.

“Holy shit, Liv!” I wave my hands at her to quiet down, and she leans in to whisper, “You’re pregnant?”

“Yes. Okay. I am. I need your help.”

Becca sits back in her chair, shaking her head.

“Dude. Wasn’t that like…your first time?”

Sighing, I hang my head. “Yes.”

“Wow, I guess you really can get pregnant after just one time. Our health class teachers would be so proud of themselves.”

“Ha, ha. Hilarious. What am I going to do?”

“It’s the twenty-first century, babe. You get to make that choice.” Becca smirks at me.

“I know that. It’s just…look, it’s not super simple now, is it? Noah is my boss. I’m the nanny. That’s just one part of it. Then there’s his ex.”

My friend furrows her brow and frowns. “His ex?”

“When she was leaving his house yesterday, she may have put two and two together, and now, she’s threatening to ruin Noah's business and take Elijah away if I don’t leave forever.”

“Girl, your life is way too complicated.”

The waiter comes with my coffee, ensuring me it’s decaf, and I sip the hot latte slowly.

“I’m aware.”

As the hot beverage fills my belly, I stare blankly at the space between me and Becca. Her hand finds mine, and I look over at her, returning the gentle squeeze.

“Hey, I know it’s a good job, but maybe it’s time to find something new. You had to know that moving on would have to happen eventually.”

My chest burns, and I can feel my heartbeat in my sternum.

“I…I guess, but I at least thought I’d be able to help Noah get Elijah through school. You know, until he was able to take care of himself to a certain degree.”

“You really wanted to work with him for that long?” Becca’s questioning stare weighs heavy on me.

I look down at the swirling foam decorating the surface of my cup. “Yeah. I did. I do. Not ever seeing them again would be…”

But my words trail off, and the tears start to flow. I pluck a napkin from the dispenser on the table and wipe my face.
