“You’re not wrong. God, she was so rude.”

His voice sounds distant as he squeezes me close to him.

“You have no idea. You should have seen her in Elijah’s room.”

“Jesus. Really? I’m so sorry.” He sighs and looks down at me. “I’m strangely glad that someone else has seen what she’s like, though. Does that make sense?”

I smile sympathetically and rest my hand on his cheek. “Completely. I’m sure she’s made you feel like the bad guy in this situation, and you’re not.”

Noah smiles back at me, and I pull him toward the couch. We sit down, and he lets out another heavy breath.

“That’s scarily accurate.” He rubs his hands down his face. “God, I’m so fucking tired of this shit.”

As I sit next to him on the couch, I realize that as much as I do want him basically every second, I also want to be there for him. Right now isn’t about riding him or teasing him; it’s about giving Noah the space to open up and feel supported.

“Was she always like this? I mean, you had to fall for her for a reason, right?”

Noah shifts on the sofa, resting his feet on the coffee table, and I turn to face him as I sit on the edge of the cushion.

“Yeah. Yes.” He nods to himself, lost in his thoughts. “She was nice once, I think. I was much younger then. Natasha came from money, so she’s always been used to higher standards than most. We met after I’d started the business and was already really successful. I don’t think she would have been interested in me before then.”

“I’m sorry, Noah. That’s…well, that fucking sucks.”

I smooth my hand down his leg.

“You don’t have to stay here and watch me mope. If you have something you’d rather be doing—”

“There’s nowhere else I want to be. I’m here to listen. How’d you come up with the idea for your developments?”

Noah smiles, his head tilting to the side as he considers me. Then he just squeezes my hand and continues on.

“I always dreamed about living somewhere fancy. Of designing something unique and grand that really showcased my personality and tastes. Doing that for other people just seemed like the next logical step.”

This conversation is different from the others we’ve had. There’s a strange intimacy here that is just as strong as, if not more so than, having sex with him.

Hookups don’t talk like this with each other, from what I understand. And it feels too good. Something deeper is brewing between us.

And it could very well change everything.

Chapter 20

Noah

I don’t know what possesses me to give Liv the full rundown of everything that happened and more, but her willingness to listen makes conversation easy.

“I definitely never would have thought of it like that. So, wait.” Liv sits up straighter on the couch. “You didn’t always have a bunch of money?”

I can’t help but laugh. The rich guy persona is definitely one that took time to cultivate, and I’m letting her in on a bit of a trade secret.

Loosening my tie and flinging it on the table, I undo the top few buttons of my shirt.

“No. Not at all. I was pretty poor, all things considered. My parents worked dead-end jobs to try and support us, and my mom was often working two.”

Liv frowns. “What about your dad? Why wasn’t he working two?”

The indignation on my behalf is charming, and I love how her mind went straight to the equality and fairness of their relationship.

Mostly because I know there was none.
