And it’s all because of Olivia.

I’ve been working on this massive development for ages, and now that I’m so close to the finish line, it’s all going south. Between the delays that go beyond the expected and my utter inability to think of anything but Liv’s small frame taking my cock, I’m useless today.

“Sir?”

Malinda’s voice cuts through my office’s silence as she speaks through the intercom.

“Yeah.”

I close my laptop, hanging my head in my hands, and extremely disappointed in my results over the last hour.

“You told me to remind you that you have an appointment with the lawyer this evening. You should leave now if you want to avoid the traffic.”

“Thanks, Malinda.”

I click off the speaker and get my stuff ready to take home. Another late night in the office is unavoidable at this point. As I lock up and start for the elevator, my phone rings.

“Hey, Noah. Just checking in before our appointment. You feeling ready?”

My lawyer, Daniel, knows these face-to-face meetings are the bane of my existence, and I appreciate the call.

“No, but there’s nothing I can do about it.” It’s no use lying to the guy.

“Ha. Well, I get it. Let’s just go in expecting the worst, right? You know she’s going to harp on you, so you have to keep your cool.”

“I’ll do my best.”

The drive down to the Jones, Evans & Jackson law offices isn’t far, and when Daniel and I reach the conference room where all our deliberations have taken place, Natasha and her lawyer are already waiting for us.

And so is Henry.

“Are you fucking serious right now? Why is he here?”

My angry whispers make Daniel flinch.

“Noah, keep it together. We can’t control that. We control our actions.”

I squeeze my eyes and fists tight for a moment before sitting down at the large laminate table separating me from my soon-to-be ex-wife. My stomach churns and twists into knots as Natasha finishes her private conversation with her lawyer, Mr. Ensworth, and finally faces me.

We’ve been doing this dance for months now, and every time I make an offer, she refuses or misses the deadline to answer, which means we have to start all over again.

“Now, then, we’re meeting again to discuss divorce terms and settlements that will be made to arrange an amicable split. Mrs. Steele—”

“Natasha.”

“My apologies, Natasha. Your lawyer has informed me that you want to reject our current proposal. Would you please explain?”

“It’s not enough.”

When Natasha offers her answer, it’s done while she picks at her nails and stares at the table. She’s chewing gum, a habit I never liked, and when she, at last, decides to look at us—at me—she seems bored.

I clench my jaw, fighting to keep my voice even. “What do you mean, it’s not enough? It’s half of the assets. It’s a more than fair offering, considering you never provided an income while we were together.”

“And what about the company? What do I get of that?”

Her voice grates in my ear, and I wonder how I never noticed it during the time we’d tried to make our relationship anything more than decent sex.

“Mrs.—” she eyes my lawyer as he’s about to speak “—Natasha. The company is not included in the breakdown of the current assets. It was started as an independent venture, and you neither funded nor contributed labor to its development or maintenance.”
