“You’ll get used to it,” I told her. “Now go up there and draft your paper until dinner is ready. It's steak night. Ribeye for me and swordfish for Aiden. I wasn't sure if you were a pescatarian, so I also picked up a marinated cauliflower steak, if you would prefer.”
“I'm feeling adventurous today. Let’s try the swordfish.”

Once I was sure Ember would not come back down again, I asked Logan how his trip to the police department had gone.
“I was right. The kid has a record, but the file is sealed. Ted said it most likely means he was a juvenile when the crime was committed.”
“Or somebody had enough influence and money to have the record sealed,” I suggested.
“Not likely in this case.” He shook his head. “According to Ember, they were living off her paycheck until she finally had enough and split.”
The more I got to know about this guy, the more I understood why Logan disliked him so much. But there was a significant difference between disliking someone and being able to prove they were an arsonist.
“How was your day? Did you get to meet this Kristen?”
“No, I thought it was best to give Ember some distance. We need to keep her safe, but we don't want to scare the hell out of her at the same time. I watched from the car.” He agreed it was smart on my part. “A weird thing happened, though. Ember offered to give me the girl's phone number and when I turned her down, she asked if I thought you'd be interested.”
“Oh yeah? What did she look like?”
“Don't be a dick and for the record, she looked like Denise ten years ago. I think Ember was fishing to see if we would be interested in this other woman.”
“What's it matter to her?”
“I think she might be developing a crush on us.” I saw the look in his eyes. “Forget it. She is a guest in this house, and it would be coercive to take advantage of the situation.”
He blew out a long breath. “You keep saying that, but what if, through no effort on our part, she makes the first move?”
“Forget it, Logan. I will not take advantage of this girl. Even if she begs us to have sex with her, we will not do it.” I just hoped I could be as adamant if I found myself in such a position.
“Fine,” was all he said, but I knew he would honor our agreement.
“Why don't the two of you come with me tonight?” He was already shaking his head no. “We're throwing at Shorty’s, and I know how much you love their wings.”
“Nobody wants me around. I remind them of how dangerous the Job is. They look at me and think about the next call—it could be them who ends up in the hospital or worse.”
“That's crazy. These guys love you. You’re a hero to them.” I smiled. “Besides, none of us are stupid enough to run into a three-alarm blaze without backup.”
“Fuck you. You just said I was a hero.” He puffed out his chest and put his fists on his hips. We both laughed. “Who are you playing tonight?”
“The Water Department.”
“Not the water dweebs. I hate those pricks. It'd be nice to see them get their asses kicked. Let me think about it.”
A couple of hours later, while we were preparing dinner. Logan asked, “Do you want to use this cauliflower as a side?”
“No, let's save it. I’ll make a nice salad instead.” He came over and wrapped his arms around me. He nuzzled the back of my neck, and I gave out a sigh. His hardness was pressed against my ass. As much as I wanted to take him upstairs and do something about it, it did not feel right with Ember in the house and awake.
I turned so I was facing him, my hands on his broad shoulders. “It was sweet what you did today. The bedding and plants, I mean.”
“It was nothing.” He kissed my lips, his hard cock now pressing against mine. “I wanted her to feel as welcome as you make me feel.” Maybe not this welcome, I thought as I slipped my hand down his sweats.
I gave him a soft squeeze, earning a small moan. “Please say you'll come with me.”
“Fine, but only if Ember wants to go.”
“Go where?” I yanked my hand out of his pants and turned to see Ember standing in the doorway. Logan and I blushed, but she appeared unaware I had been jerking him off.
