“Ohh. Then maybe you could introduce us.”

“He wouldn’t be interested,” I said a bit too sharply. “He’s gay.”

“Damn. All the good-looking ones are.” She took one more look and sighed. “I am really sorry about the shitty run of luck you’re having. First your car and apartment, then you lose your job. It sucks. What are you going to do?”

“I start back at the Piggly-Wiggly on Monday. Wait, how did you know I lost my job?”

“Tommy told me about it.” It took her a while to explain that her brother, Tommy, knew Danny, the cook at Riverdell Diner. They met playing Grand Theft Auto online. From her description, I recognized him as French fries and a small Coke. He ordered the same thing every time he came into the diner.

He would look at me in a way that gave me the creeps. I was always glad when Danny took his break, so they could go out back and smoke. He was the only customer I ever saw Danny talk to. “I didn’t know he was your brother.”

“We should all hang out together sometime.” She looked back to where Aiden was still standing. “You could bring Mr. Big and Sexy with you.”

“Sure, it would be fun.” No way in hell that was ever happening. “But if I can get your notes, we really have to get going.”

“Of course, here you go. Don’t worry about returning them. I made copies.” She handed me a folder and looked across the street. “I'm not sure your friend is gay. He keeps looking over here, checking me out.” She arched her back, pushing out her chest even further. “Give him my number, just in case.”

“Will do, but I've got to run now. Thanks again for the notes.”

When I got to the car, Aiden was holding the door open for me. “She's pretty, don't you think?”

“Who? Your overly made-up blonde friend with big boobs?

“So, you noticed her. Do you think she's pretty?” I asked, again.

“Not especially. But I can see how certain guys might find her attractive. I'm just not one of them.”

“Then why did you keep looking at her?”

“I was watching you, not her.” My heart fluttered, but then he added, "To make sure nobody bothered you.” I was still not sure how I felt about him and Logan keeping such a watchful eye on me. They seemed to think Reggie had something to do with my apartment catching on fire, but that was ridiculous. He may have been a lot of things—a drunk, homophobic, and terrible at oral sex; just to name a few, but he was not an arsonist.

Besides, it wasn't like I broke his heart by ending things between us. The only thing he missed about me was my paycheck. When he finds out I got fired, he will move on to the next unsuspecting woman. Laying on the charm just long enough to convince her he is a catch.

“If you don't want Kristin’s number, maybe I should give it to Logan. I'm sure she would like him just as well.”

“That’s very thoughtful of you, but I don't think he'd be interested, either.”

“Why? Is it because you guys are in a committed relationship?”

“Not exactly. Logan would like to add a third person to our relationship, and I have agreed to keep an open mind if the right person were to come along.”

“You mean another man.”

“Absolutely not. It's taken Logan long enough to get comfortable with me. I could not imagine how he would react to having another man in bed with us. And I have no interest in vying with another man for his affections.”

I could see by the look on his face that he'd not intended to tell me any of that and would prefer I dropped the subject. But I was dying to know the answer to my next question. “Then why don't you want Kristen’s phone number?”

“She's not our type. Big boobs have always intimidated me. I’m never sure what to do with them. And Logan likes a more natural look. All that make-up would be a big turnoff for him.” Have I mentioned that I am small breasted and wear very little makeup?

“But it’s not just about physical appearance.” He paused, as if looking for the right words. “There also needs to be an emotional connection. Something your friend doesn’t seem to care about, if she will give out her phone number just because she likes the way a guy looks.”

“Shallow people are the worst,” I agreed, and none too subtly added, “I think you and I have a lot in common.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

Logan

The previous night, I had shared my concerns about this Reggie character with Aiden. It was the reason he agreed to take my place and drive Ember to the college. I knew she would be safe with him, while I followed up with my contact at Riverdell PD.
