"We are, but I don't know when or where because your stubborn friend won't tell me shit." The curse word made me laugh. Looked like my friend’s foul mouth was rubbing off on her.

"Sullivan," Ford finally got up from his ass to join the conversation, "was there something you wanted from us before ruining our coffee break?"

"Oh, we'll be covering the ER together for a couple of hours. I forgot about it." As I said the words, all of our beepers went off.

"Well, seems like you’re lucky; we have an incoming. Two ambulances."

Oh, shit.

Zach was the first to bolt to the door, turning into this superman with a white coat. Emergencies always brought the best and worst out of him, like right now...

"London can you move any fucking slower? I need you to clear the trauma room for me."

"I am right behind you, calm down."

"Well, you should run faster and do the job." She threw him a dirty look but kept any other words to herself. Everyone around here knew he was a hard ass boss, always expecting perfection from the medical staff he worked with - especially London.

All three of us got quickly to the ER, gearing up in gowns, gloves and surgical masks, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught Jess doing the same.

"Hey, what are you doing down here?"

"ER called, one of the victims is a four year old kid."

Fuck, those were the worst. I didn’t know how Jess could manage to see so much child trauma every day.

Suddenly, the double doors burst open, and two gurneys were pushed in by paramedics. There was a lot happening at once, and all of us were trying to stay focused.

Jess ran to the kid with two other nurses and her pediatrics resident while London, Zach and I went to the other one.

"A huge billboard fell and injured multiple people. Here we have a thirty-two year old female, presenting with multiple bone fractures. Her pulse is all over the place, and she had two seizures on the way here."

The paramedic gave us the info quickly and clearly, and I looked up at Zach.

"Your call, Dr. Ford. Lead the way."

"Trauma room one, now. London, I need x-ray and a breathing test; her chest movements are irregular. Sullivan, I can't send her to CT until I figure out a way to stabilize her heart. Can you make a blind consult?"

"Yes but move fast."

We all walked in the room, people fussing around, and I took a step back to tune it all out. The faces became blurry, and the sounds and screams in the room faded, giving me space to think. It was just me and the patient now.

I checked her pupils and head injuries, taking notice of anything that could be seen. I was checking the monitors for abnormalities when I heard the woman moaning in pain.

"Ma'am can you hear me? You are at the hospital, but don't worry, you are in great hands." Panic installed in her eyes, and she looked at me, anguished, so I tried to calm her down by speaking low and slowly, making sure she understood me. "The pain will go away soon."

The woman tried to tell me something and moved one hand to her abdomen, but it was hard to understand her.

"Can you say it again?" I asked, but she only made some mumbling sounds. Something in the way she sounded triggered me. "Put your right hand on your nose, please."

She tried to follow my instructions, but her palm hovered over her face aimlessly. She had lost control over her movement, fuck.

"Zach, I need to take her to the OR right now."

"Her heart rhythm is a mess."

Before he could say anything else, the patient started convulsing, taken by another seizure.

"OR, now!" I roared over the noise. "Her brain is bleeding, and the hematoma is growing. I need to open her up. Ford, scrub in with me to make sure her heart pulls through." He nodded, and everyone started to move.
