I ran my hands through my hair, trying to wake my resourceful side. I was here now, elbows deep in the game, so I had to play.

I took my phone out of my pocket and called London so I could ask her for instruction. Since she and Zach, my best fucking friend and my worst fucking nightmare, got together, everyone in our group ran to London for help. She was both the mother and the father, all wrapped up in a beautiful body with a warm smile. For the past six months, she was a weekend substitute mother for Chelsea, spending almost every off day she had at my house, covered in baby formula. I didn’t want to know all the fucks that flew my way for all the sex Zachary missed. That man would walk with his dick between her legs if they wouldn't end up in jail.

"Hello, Doctor Sullivan, what’s up?" her cheerful voice greeted me, and I heard Zach mumbling something in the background.

"Hey, am I interrupting anything?" I thought I was.

"James, you're never interrupting. How's Boston?"

I thought about my answer and came to the decision that the best lies were those close to the truth.

"Actually, London, I am back in Chicago, but I didn't make it home yet. Look, I have to help out... a family friend. Can you tell me where I could buy some dresses? They need to be extra nice.”

Silence greeted me from the other end of the line.

"Well, you could try... the mall. What do you need women’s clothes for, James?"

"I told you, for a family friend. I don't have time to go and walk all over the mall. I need a one stop place for clothes, makeup and maybe some jewelry."

"Aha, ok." The uncertainty in her voice was obvious. "And what do you need it for, what's the occasion?"

That's when I knew I was in some shit. London was a smart girl, and there was no way I could tell her what I was doing. Again, I chose to stick close to the truth.

"A dress for a date would be nice," I muttered into the phone like a grumpy bear.

"A what?"

"A date, London. I need something suitable for a date."

"I..." She was suddenly cut off, and Zach came to the phone.

"How much nerve do you have in those small balls of yours, to interrupt my day in bed with my naked and hot girlfriend so you can go on a date and score tonight?"

This was the kind of stupid prick he was, but he was lucky enough to be with a woman that loved him like he hung the moon.

"Shut the fuck up and put London back on. Sooner I'm done with her, the sooner you can go back to filthying her up."

"Really, man, who's the chick?”

"I... Zach, I don't wanna talk about it now."

Luckily, London was back on the situation before he got to pistol me further, but I knew that I was not off the hook with him. He was gonna pay me back for every ounce of grief I gave him when he was preying on London.

"James, where do you buy your suits from?"

"I have a personal shopper, and she delivers them to my house."

"Good, call her. Usually, personal shoppers work in outlets so she should have everything you need. If you don't find anything, we can call Paris and talk to her."

Her cousin, Paris, worked in fashion. See? London had all the answers. Me and our other friend, Jessica had a bet, that without her, Zach wouldn't make it to fifty years old.

"Thank you, you're a life saver. I owe you one." I owed her many, but she was nice enough to never remind me.

Two hours later, I picked up a beautiful ruby red dress, a pair of Valentino shoes, some casual clothes for Rita to sleep in and something I was told was lacy lingerie. I had the decency to not open that box. I asked Caroline, my shopper, to send a full wardrobe to my house by tomorrow morning. If I ended up with Rita in my home, she should have some clothes there. All the designer labels cost me a small fortune, but I owed her that much.

I also picked up a bouquet of roses that matched the color of her dress. I didn’t know where we were gonna end up after tonight. I didn’t know if I'd come to my senses and tell her the truth, maybe convince her to go to Chicago General for memory therapy. But if one date was all I'd ever give her, I'd make it the night of her life.

My wife would deserve that much.
