"Come on, man, let me play my cards now that Zach the shit face is not here. You have your sweet pair of legs to keep you busy, Sullivan. I sent your new wife to your consult office."

My jaw dropped on the white tiles that covered the floor. Rita? Now Emmy was involved too?

"What?"

"Caught her looking for you at the admission desk, and I did the chivalrous thing and showed her the way. I'm not gonna lie to you, Sullivan, I looked at her ass. Hot."

I tensed listening to him talk about Rita's ass.

"Shaw, you better stop talking or the next time you'll see a surgery table, you’ll be laying on it."

Lo

Back to my floor, the first thing I saw when I walked out of the elevator were my daughter’s sparkly eyes. She was giggling like crazy while in my scrub nurse's arms and put her arms up like she was reaching for the sky. Mary tickled her belly, and she released another loud giggle. I loved seeing her like that.

"Look, Chelsea, sweetheart, your daddy's here."

"Yes, he is, come here princess." When Chelsea heard my voice, she twisted her whole body to look around for me and started squirming so Mary would hand her over, and I picked her up.

"Hey, baby girl. What brings you here?"

"That spicy arm candy that is hanging out on your office brought her here. New girlfriend, Dr. Sullivan?"

"Rita's in my office?"

"No, she's on your office, spread all over your files in a very sexy way. Ah, I remember when I was young and had a boyfriend in the first hospital I worked at. You did not answer the question."

"And I'm not going to. Can you please watch Chelsea for me? We have a clear schedule for a couple of hours. If the ER calls just delegate someone else."

"I already did that when the señorita asked, so go, take your lunch break. I'll take the princess to the cafeteria for a cupcake."

"Oh, let's keep it down with the sugar for the baby. Give her a banana."

"You modern parents and your load of crap. I'll get her what I want, something good. I raised four kids, and none of them is dead so walk away and let us be."

I smiled, shook my head, and strapped Chelsea into her stroller. She'd get a cupcake because there was no way to negotiate spoiling kids with Mary.

Before they walked away, Mary turned around and gave me a wink.

"I like this one better, doctor. Way better."

I knew. I did too.

My office was at the end of the Neurological floor, last door on the right. I had the corner office because I was the primary doctor here and because for the most part, neurology was different. I didn’t get to do it like Zach, Jessica or Shaw; I didn’t barge through the door, start opening people and let the wound heal after. No, neurology required finesse and time. Sometimes, I could diagnose and go to the OR right away; sometimes, it took up to a year of therapy, consults and investigations before I could take the leap and drill into someone's skull.

My office was my quiet place. At first, when Chief Sadin took a chance on me and replaced the old head of neurology, I used to love it. Time changed that for me. In time, I used to come here to find a moment of peace, a quiet, empty space where I could focus on the job and tell myself that if my professional life was good, then so was my life at home.

Now I was walking inside happy. Excited. Rushing to see what waited for me on the other side. I never - never - felt excitement when Avery stopped by the hospital, but when I opened the door and saw Rita smiling and biting her lip, my heart nearly jumped out the fucking window.

"Hello, Dr. Sullivan."

"Hello, love. What winds bring you around?"

"Well, I heard the news that there's one hot brain doctor in this hospital, and I came here to see it with my own two eyes."

"You want me to take a spin so you can have a full look?"

She jumped off the desk, licked her lips and gave me a side look before turning her gracious back on me.
