The patient flat-lined before anyone had a chance to resuscitate, and even if a doctor had got to him in time, odds were his brain was close to mashed potatoes.

Around us, the horrific feelings of the threat started to dissipate. People were walking around, the staff was working at full capacity to get things back on track. It was like it never happened, but I was sure I would never be the same after today.

"London?" I knew she was not harmed. I just want to make sure she made it to safety.

"I saw her with Dr. Ford, and she seemed fine."

Almost like Sandra Brooks summoned him, Ford materialized in the door frame with his traditional frown face on.

"You son of a rancid bitch..."

I couldn’t do much except crook my neck to see him, because Brooks put pressure on me to not sit up.

"I'm so sorry, Zachary, for putting London in danger like that. There is nothing you could say to make me feel lower."

"You also acted like a human shield to protect her so don't give me that bullshit."

He was smiling, but there was no doubt today burdened him with the weight of ten years. I had a feeling he’d rock some grey hairs.

"I was expecting to say hello to your fist."

"I was expecting you to not be so stupid since you have six board certifications, but hey, we get what we get. We're good, man, we're all good."

"She was in danger because of me. If something would have happened to her..."

"If something would have happened to London, I would have burned this place to the ground, but it didn't. Let's leave it at that."

Yeah, let's all move the fuck on from today. But what was there beyond?

"I have to call home."

"Chelsea is still with the girls. I called ten minutes ago, and she was having some lunch. Mashed carrots or some shit. They know what happened. Jess had to take a Xanax, but I told them everyone is fine."

"Still I..."

"Man, can you shut the fuck up for a second? You don't need to look after everybody. You...I'm just glad you're here, talking and all."

Hell must be freezing because his eyes were shimmering in the lights, almost like they were wet.

"Umm, Ford, are you crying?" I laughed out loud and felt a pinch of pain from the movement and stopped.

"I am not. The fuck are you saying?"

"Who's the pussy now, sucker?"

"Brooks," he called the resident who paid us absolutely zero attention. I think people were getting used to us. "What's the status?"

"I took the bullet out and have to stitch him up now. Dr. Sullivan will live. Actually, he can go home tomorrow if he's clean of infection." The last thing I needed was a fucking septic shock.

"Zach, you need to go and find my phone, or any phone for that matter."

"Rita is outside."

"What? She...she came to see me?"

The claw that was gripping my heart seemed to finally let loose, and it had nothing to do with the fact that the danger was gone. It was Rita. She was here. Impatient to catch a glimpse of her again, I looked behind Zach, but there was no one there.

"I meant she's out in the hallway, waiting to see you. She was here before the code was ran. We had a talk about a lot of deep stuff."
