She begged me to bring her along, but I have no idea what I’m walking into, and I won’t risk her life again after the Four Seas’ warehouse incident. According to Jimmy, Marco went radio silent, and his last communication had been a distress call.

I never should’ve sent my brother to deal with the Puerto Rican mob alone.

The flight attendant appears from the front of the plane, swinging her hips in that tight navy skirt. I glance up at her again, and I recognize the full pouty lips and flashy red hair pulled into a tight bun. I’d fucked her on a particularly long flight when she first joined the crew a few months ago. Any redhead used to do it for me, but now, I feel nothing.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Rossi, we’ll be landing momentarily.” She leans in and drops her hand to my thigh. “Is there anything I can do for you during our final descent?” Her gaze flickers to my crotch, and I wait for the burst of heat, but my cock doesn’t even stir.

Fuck, my little fox has broken my dick.

“No, thank you.” I shove her hand off and cross my legs. “Tell the captain I need all the paperwork cleared before we hit the ground. The moment we touch soil I need off this jet.”

The flight attendant dips her head, the disappointment evident in the flash of her dark eyes. “Of course, Mr. Rossi.”

I watch her as she sashays to the cockpit, willing my cock to spring to life at the sight of her curvy ass, but nothing.

Shit. I’m in love with Maisy. It’s the only possible answer. But how? I don’t even know how to love someone. Only a dark hole exists where that organ should reside. My father never wanted anything to do with us, my mother abandoned us, and Marco has been the only constant in my life. Do I love my brother? I suppose, I must. But certainly not well.

How can you love when you’ve never been taught?

The jet lands on the tarmac, and I slide to the edge of the leather chair. Once the wheels stop spinning, I unbuckle my seatbelt and reach for my briefcase in the overhead bin. Securing my gun in the waistband of my slacks, I prepare to disembark.

“Wake up, Jimmy, we’re here.”

My righthand man rubs his eyes, lets out a yawn and pushes himself out of his seat. “I’m ready, boss.”

The only reason I’d sent Marco to make a deal with the Puerto Rican mob was to gain a stronger foothold in their territory in Manhattan. It was all part of my grand scheme to ruin the Kings. Now it seems this entire venture would prove fruitless at best and put my brother in the crosshairs at worst.

Fuck. This is exactly why men in my line of business avoid any meaningful connections at all costs. They’re nothing but complications.

And yet, the idea of cutting out Maisy from my life is already unbearable.

The flight attendant appears again and without sparing me a glance this time, marches to the cabin door and unlocks it. My entire body twitches as she takes her damned sweet time. Every second away from Maisy has my anxiety reaching new levels, and the concern for my brother’s safety isn’t helping either. It’s not like him to just disappear.

The door finally glides open, and the darkness beyond momentarily scrambles my senses. When my pupils grow accustomed to the night beyond, I can just make out a few figures surrounding a suped-up Hummer on the private airfield.

Narrowing my eyes, I step onto the tarmac and focus on the familiar form taking shape. Marco stands between two large males, bound and gagged while a woman twirls a gun around her middle finger.

Inhaling a steadying breath, I march toward them with my own hand on my gun. Jimmy trails beside me, his pistol already cocked.

“Welcome to San Juan, Mr. Rossi.”

CHAPTER 31

IT WAS LOVE

Nico

The cool mask slips on, and I offer the head of the Puerto Rican cartel a seductive smile. “A pleasure as always, Esmeralda.”

The dark-haired beauty saunters closer, full, pouty lips smeared in crimson puckered. Her leather pantsuit molds to every curve of her lethal figure as she approaches. “Your brother fucked me, poorly at that, then tried to force me into a deal that was not only blatantly disrespectful but was also utter bullshit. I know exactly what is going on in Manhattan right now, and it’s a complete shitshow. I have no desire to become embroiled in a family feud. The Kings and La Sombra Boricua have long had a mutual respect and understanding, and I plan to keep it that way.”

Marco struggles against his captors and mutters something that sounds like a curse, but with the gag I can’t quite make it out. Fucking idiot. What was he thinking screwing around with her?

“I fully understand your concerns and I apologize if my brother was less than tactful when he approached you. Can we at least untie him so that I may get to the bottom of this?” I flash her my best smile. “For me, Esmeralda. I believe that we too have always had a sort of understanding.”

With a grunt, Esmeralda ticks her head at the two men holding Marco. “Desátalo.” As her men begin to loosen the binds, she turns to me once more. “Get your brother out of my sight. I’ll give you the opportunity to clear this up, but if I don’t like what I hear, Marco will be returning to New York an only child.”

Jimmy tenses beside me, and I can feel him move a step closer. We’re surrounded by her men, far away from our turf. I’ll be forced to play nice for now.
