“This is her?” A raspy voice cuts through the roar of my thundering pulse.

“Yeah, boss, this is the redhead who’s been living with Nico Rossi.”

“Where’s the other one?” he barks.

“Chao’s got her back there.”

“Why the fuck you idiots nabbed Dante Valentino’s wife is beyond me. I only needed her.”

“The blonde got in the way. She’s a wild one that girl, she was kicking, punching and biting. The bitch wouldn’t let us take this one without her.”

A faint smile curls my lips beneath the mask. Despite the last few turbulent months of our friendship, Rose had really been there for me today. She could have just run away, but instead, she fought our kidnappers with everything she had.

“I can’t believe you couldn’t take on a couple girls.” The man hisses a curse.

“Sorry, boss.”

“Take off her hood and gag.”

A gasp peels out as the gag falls, and the cowl is torn from my head. The murky lights nearly blind me after the intense darkness. Blinking quickly, my pupils adjust to the dim surroundings and the man glaring down at me.

The man I assume is the leader of the Four Seas is built like an ox, with a thick barrel chest and a gleaming bald head with a dark braid jutting from the top. “So you’re the one,” he snarls. “You’re the reason Nico Rossi has reneged on the deal to marry my sister…”

“He did?” The excitement in my tone is just embarrassing, but I can’t keep the happiness from spilling over despite my current predicament. Nico chose me. He ended his war with the Kings for me, and now he possibly started a new one with the Four Seas for me.

My heart sputters out a giddy little dance. Which is just ridiculous because I’m probably about a second away from being tortured or worse.

Qian, or at least I’m assuming that’s who looms over me, eyes my body from head to toe. “I refuse to accept Rossi’s answer, so you see, I had to take matters into my own hands. Maybe, if you don’t exist, he’ll reconsider his position.”

Oh, sugar, I’m so dead. I gulp and try to stagger back a step, but I hit a wall of muscle. I spin around to find the guy who, judging by his rather memorable stench, escorted me from the car. His meaty hands wrap around my upper arm and force me toward Qian.

“What do you want me to do with her?”

He ticks his head at a dark corner, and I can just make out a few chairs around a table. Beside it, a gaudy gold throne sits against the wall. “Tie her up. We’re about to find out how much this girl really means to Mr. Rossi.”

I swallow hard as the guy drags me toward the dark nook, and Qian stalks out. The moment he’s gone, I spin at my captor. “Where’s Rose?”

“Don’t worry about it,” he mutters before shoving me down on the chair.

I hiss out a curse as my tailbone smacks against the hard metal. “Shitzu!”

“Excuse me?” The Four Seas goon stares at me like I’ve hit my head or something.

“Nothing,” I mumble. “You know, you should just let me go. When Nico gets here he’s going to gouge your eyes out or something even more horrible. Trust me, I know. I went on a date with this guy and?—”

The man stares at me, dark brows furrowed.

“Sorry, I ramble when I’m nervous, but seriously, if you don’t want to die today, you should really just let me go.”

A dark laugh spills from his drawn lips. “I’m not the one dying today, little girl. If Rossi doesn’t agree to marry Jia, it’ll be your blood all over the floor.”

Jia? Bleh. The idea of Nico married to anyone else sends nausea crawling up my throat.

The slap of heavy footfalls jerks my attention across the room. Qian marches back in, a satisfied smile on his lips. “Your boyfriend is on his way.”

“You’re both so dead,” I hiss. “My boyfriend is scary as fork, and he’s going to unalive you both in the worst possible way.”

A sinister grin flashes across Qian’s face. “I guess we’re about to find out exactly who the scarier mother fucker really is.”
