“How? What?” Rose stared at him, confused. “You cannot show up to a place and buy everything after you get there. We need plans, reservations, luggage, and possibly a passport.”

Warren reached across the seat to take her hand. He brought it to his lips and kissed each knuckle as he looked into her eyes with amusement. “My precious Petal, you can when you own the island. Your passport is in the glove box with mine. We have clothes at our house there, just like I had clothes stashed here. The plane will be waiting for us when we get to the airport.”

“Huh,” Rose gaped at him. “There is so much wrong with the words coming out of your mouth I have no idea where to start.”

“Relax and enjoy, Petal. You have all the time in the world to ask me whatever you want to know.”

“I knew you were well off, but an island? Who has their own island?”

“It’s we. We are well off. I didn’t buy the island.”

“You inherited it?”

“I got it as payment for a job.”

“Must have been one hell of a big job.”

“A small government needed some help a few years ago. The man in charge needed a little help defeating an uprising. I was gone less than a week.”

“Holy shit.” Rose had no idea what to say to that.

His phone rang before she could decide if she wanted more details. Rose narrowed her eyes at him as he answered it.

“Make it fast,” Warren said, sending Rose a wink. He listened for a minute, watching his wife get irritated. “No, everything goes back to the club. Two trucks should be there in about an hour. Load everything and take it to the new warehouse. After each item is inventoried and checked for damage, everyone is off with pay until I get back. No new jobs go on the books unless I approve them. Call Brooks if it is an emergency. Let the calls go to the answering service. No contact until I show up at the office.”

Rose listened in shock. He shut down the entire office until they got back from wherever they were going. Oh yeah. The island of ill-gotten gains. They had one of those. She had so many questions. When Rose looked at her husband, he gave her a smile hot enough to make the inside of the truck steam. She couldn’t help herself. Rose smiled back.

“Yes, I promised the Cubans a discount. Knock thirty percent off and send them the bill. After that, I don’t care if the whole place burns down. I will be with my wife, and we will be unreachable for at least two weeks.”

Warren ended the call. The office was squared away, and his wife was looking at him like they were going to be late to the airport.

“You ready?” He asked before he put the truck into gear.

Rose had a feeling Warren was asking more than if she was ready to go home. She was. She was ready for everything.

“Way past ready,” Rose told him.

Warren drove through the gates with Brooks behind them. Rose waved goodbye to Franny, who was standing at the door of the clubhouse. Placing her hand on his leg, she hummed as she turned the radio on. They had a long drive back to Texas, but there was no one she would rather do it with. She had no idea where they would live, but it didn’t bother her. They could figure it out later.

Warren squeezed her hand and sent her a sexy wink. Rose’s soul swelled with joy. It was Warren. She was drawn to him as much as he was drawn to her. Rose couldn’t be happier.

Things would get in the way. Especially the life they led. Rose knew with complete certainty they would figure it out. Warren wouldn’t have it any other way. She was his. Fajita dates and orgasms. Work trips and surprises. Lazy Sunday mornings and throwing knives. It was Warren who made her heart stutter and her soul shine.

With her hand in his, Rose watched the desert roll by as he drove them toward a plane waiting to whisk them away for two glorious weeks with no phones.

Rose slid her sunglasses over her eyes. She had no clothes and no idea where they were going. She couldn’t find it in her to care. Warren was beside her. He wasn’t going anywhere. No more distance and no more lies. Love and happiness glowed from within her. What could she say? It was the Warren Effect.
