“You looked up restaurant reviews?”

Warren nodded.

“Bunny said the closest town was an hour away.”

“Hour and a half.”

“You sent someone to get me fajitas at a restaurant an hour and a half away.”

“Made them wrap everything separately so nothing went bad while you slept. Vulture warmed it up.”

“Birdy can cook?” Rose cried incredulously.

“He secretly likes that you have a name for him,” Warren smiled. “Vulture wouldn’t shut up about it. Made it seem like it was a pain in the ass, but he loves it.”

“He was talking to you on the phone.”

Warren nodded and spread the food out over the bed. He held out his hand for her and waited. His heart raced as he waited for her to take it.

Rose looked at the food spread across the bed. It was her favorite meal. Her stomach grumbled as she weighed her options. Should she take his hand, share a meal with him, and risk going for one more last ride? If she went for the door, she would have to get it unlocked and open before he moved two steps. The probability wasn’t high that she would make it. Sighing, Rose walked around him and sat on the bed.

Warren frowned. It wasn’t a win, but it wasn’t exactly a loss. She stayed. Even if it was because he would beat her to the door, he chose to focus on the positive. He handed her a plate and got comfy on the bed beside her. His mind went back to when things were less complicated before all this started.

Rose was silent. The tension buzzed between them. She wasn’t going to be the first one to talk when he was the one who had so much on his mind. She was on her second fajita before he opened his mouth.

“Tank, Vulture, Brooks, and I all served on the same unit.”

“The one you couldn’t talk about?”

Warren nodded. “Technically, we don’t exist anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that we were sent places to do things that no one talks about. No one was coming to get us if we failed.”

Rose swallowed hard. She knew he did things. That was part of their life for a long time. When he retired, it had been sudden. He never talked about it, but it didn’t take a genius to figure out something went wrong.

“Tank was your commander?”

“Yeah.”

“They were there when things went wrong?”

Warren’s shrewd eyes assessed her.

“Not rocket science. You left. You came home. You retired.”

“It all went sideways,” he continued after a few minutes. “We lost two guys.”

“I’m sorry,” Rose whispered, reaching out to squeeze his knee.

“After all that went down, Tank and Vulture started an MC. Brooks and I had a harder time giving it up.”

“That is why you started working security.”

Warren cringed.

“Oh shit,” she gulped. “You don’t work security, do you?”
