Page 29 of The Warren Effect

Rose filled his thoughts. Only being able to see her on the screen of his phone was getting to be too much. He found himself strategizing how to get her back when he knew he should be focused on the next job. There was so much left unsaid, unexplained. The nights he watched her sleep kept him going and reminded him of how much was on the line. There was no home to sneak into anymore. There was, but not one she knew about. Warren was going to get his wife back. There were a few more loose ends to tie up.

“Cryotherapy. Why in the hell would anyone pay that much money to dip themselves past the point of freezing? Poor bastard’s balls are probably shriveled into the size of a grape.”

“The rich people do weird shit all the time.”

“You telling me you do that?”

“Nope,” Warren cringed, picking up his coffee. Taking a small sip, he returned the cup to the saucer on the table.

“You have more money than anyone I know. It cannot be a rich thing. Sounds like a dumbass thing to me.”

“Want me to schedule you a session?”

“No way in hell,” Brooks shivered. “My junk would go into hibernation if it got that cold.”

“Anything else I can get for you, gentlemen?” The waitress purred.

“Well, honey-”

“No,” Warren interrupted Brooks. He shoved a handful of bills at her and told her to keep the change.

“That was rude,” Brooks complained.

“What was the stewardess’ name?”

“Alyssa.”

“Want to try again?”

“Alice.”

“You are hopeless,” Warren chuckled as a scream erupted from the spa across the street.

“That is our cue to get moving.”

“Her name was Evette.”

“I knew it started with a vowel.”

“Brooks, someday we are going to come home from a mission, and there is going to be a woman waiting in the parking lot with a kid that looks just like you. I hope she gives you one hell of a run for your money before you take over diaper duty.”

“Says the man who wears his wife’s wedding ring on a necklace because she left his ass.”

“At least I have a wife.”

“For how long?”

Sirens wailed in the distance, but they sat until they finished their coffee. A group of spectators started to gather outside the spa entrance.

“Until I take my last breath.”

“Did you tell her?”

Warren ignored him. He watched the police and ambulance come to a screeching halt on the street in front of them. They didn’t need to stay. The job had gone easier than he expected. Adjusting the timer and the lock on the immersion tank ensured their mark would not leave alive.

One more contract to fulfill before he set his sights on his wife.

“If only they were all this easy,” Brooks sighed, standing to stretch his legs.
