“But does he? Did he say her name? Did he call her a pet name?”

“Not unless bitch or pussy counts. Don’t forget about the baby.”

“Did he tell her he loved her? Ask about the kids? Talk like he cared if she was still breathing?”

“Not really. He was abrupt. Ben was too concerned about counting the other kids to care about his tone. I cannot imagine the heartbreak and insanity that goes along with having a missing child. Sit and don’t do anything is probably what got the woman in this mess in the first place. Why did he leave his children with her if she is as inept as he claims?”

“So there may be another explanation.”

“What?” Angelina shouted.

“Hold it. Don’t twist your new sexy panties.”

Jake squeezed her hand in his. Angelina desperately wished he would put his hand back on the wheel. Jake needed both hands to drive, or they may not make it home alive. Even with both hands on the wheel, it was still questionable. She understood why Max drove them.

“I am not saying he isn’t guilty of evasion because, sweetness, that man has things he needs to fess up. I’m not sold on the baby momma.”

“What else could it be? You have been hanging around Max too long. His bro code bullshit is rubbing off on you.”

“He was in the Army, right?”

“Yes.”

“What if he is looking after a fallen brother’s family?”

“He called her names and talked to her like she was incompetent. It doesn’t matter if it is his woman to look after or a wife Ben is supposed to be looking after. He was a dick. Why would he want a picture of another man’s child?”

“All I am saying is there is something more to it. He lied to you, skirted around the truth, and evaded by omission. Anyway you look at it; Ben was wrong. He should suffer. Sending that picture with the come hither smile on your cute face will start the suffering.”

Angelina chewed her lip as she thought about what Jake said. Ben was gruff, but he was gentle with her. He never talked to her like he did the person on the phone. She threw a stapler at him and nailed him with a coffee mug. He grinned after she threw him out of her office and shot him with salt. Ben thought it was hot. His need to care for her was completely opposite of how he sounded on the phone.

Crap.

Jake might have a point. A small one. It was enough for doubt and confusion to creep in.

“You might have a point.”

“I’m sorry, sweetness. One more time, please. Not sure I heard you correctly.”

“Do you gloat like this all the time?”

“Yes,” Max growled, ripping Jake’s door open. “Where have you been?”

Angelina had been so lost in thought she didn’t realize they were parked at The Place. She couldn’t believe the car stopped without her realizing it. The need to kiss the ground was put on the back burner when the smell of food wafted toward her. Her stomach demanded to be fed first.

“We were shopping, my love. It took a little longer to get our girl everything she needed. She wears underthings bought in bulk.”

“Did you feed her?”

“No, love. Feeding our girl is your job.”

“You were late and didn’t text me.”

“I am sure I can find a way to make it up to you later tonight when you get home.”

“Fucking better,” Max grumbled.

“I might have picked up a few things for us while I was out.”
